Corrections community Based Treatment Program
would correct the culprit yet rehabilitating the offender. Various mechanisms processes are used as correction measures. This essay will discuss psychotherapy as a corrections community based treatment program as applied in the corrections of juvenile offenders. It will also highlight my reasons why I chose this topic from the list of correction programs that were provided.
Psychotherapy is an interaction based form of treatment where a trained counseling professional or psychologist establish a relationship with the client with the intents of changing the client’s way of thinking. There are various forms of psychotherapy each targeting a given system. Usually, Psychotherapy has been integrated in rehabilitation programs as it targets to change the behavior of an individual (Brazão, Motta&Rijo, 2013).
The reason I chose the psychotherapy as a correction treatment program is because of its application. One of the commonly accepted facts in dealing with juvenile crimes is most offenders commit that adaptive behavior. Secondly, when a juvenile commits a crime and is convicted of the crimes, there is an increased possibility that they will be affected emotionally and psychologically. Psychotherapy, therefore, comes in as one of the best correction measure as it addresses all these complications associated with juvenile crimes. There are various psychological conditions that are associated to vulnerability to commit crimes. An example of such conditions is the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and compulsive disorders that are common with children(Brazão, Motta&Rijo, 2013)Among juvenile offenders with such conditions, psychotherapy has proven to be a reliable rehabilitative measure. Therefore, I selected this option out of interest to learn more about it and because of its diverse application.
(Brazão, Motta&Rijo, 2013). Psychotherapy can be given to an individual client or to a group. Psychotherapy takes various forms. The most common form used, however, is conversational where the therapist communicates with the clients. This form has been also been referred to as counseling. In a rehabilitation unit, this may be backed up with other forms like art work and chart presentation. When applying this method, the psychotherapist has to assess the client to determine the most suitable system to apply(Brazão, Motta&Rijo, 2013).
As a corrective measure, psychotherapy is mainly used in children considered delinquents. The therapist seeks to understand the motivation to the maladaptive behavior and thus develop a corrective measure to this problem. This may involve sharing with other members of the group who have suffered the same problem(Brazão, Motta&Rijo, 2013). The purpose of these measures is correctional in nature rather than to punish the offender. The therapist’s role during psychotherapy is to help the offender explore intrinsic solutions to the prevailing circumstances.
Psychotherapy, among the very young also involves the caregiver. Since as a separate entity which is referred to as family therapy(Brazão, Motta&Rijo, 2013). It cannot, however, be separated from psychotherapy because parenting and juvenile crimes occur as one and the appropriate parenting has been shown to reduce crimes among the children.
Psychotherapy is also invaluable among children offenders who have other underlying psychological illnesses. The role of the psychotherapist would be to help the child understand his/ her condition better. The caregivers are also taught the complications that may be associated with these kinds of illnesses and thus take preventative measures early(Brazão, Motta&Rijo, 2013). Communities invest in these programs particularly to help the society understand condition that predispose the youths to crimes. Among these forms, medical psychotherapists may be involved since the can put their clients under medications.
Moreover, this form of therapy is used in drug rehabilitative centers where drug addicts are kept. As we all know, addiction among the youths is a major contributor to juvenile crimes. Since most addiction result from maladaptive behavior or as defense mechanisms, involving a psychotherapist may uncover the cause of this maladaptation and thus help the offender get an amicable solution(Brazão, Motta&Rijo, 2013).
In conclusion, psychotherapy plays a major role in correcting juvenile offenders. Its wide application in rehabilitation is a major reason it has been used since time immemorial to correct both the youths and adult offenders.
