Essay Topics Guidelines

Make sure you have listened to the lectures relevant to the topic you have chosen and have read the ancient evidence for that topic.

Your essay must be based on both the ancient evidence and modern scholarship. In addition to the suggested readings given in the Study Guide, you are strongly advised to pursue further research. You may browse the Library’s catalogue for relevant items and search the Library’s databases (eg. JSTOR, Project Muse) for relevant journal articles. Click on ‘Databases’ on the Library Homepage (http://www.lib.mq.edu.au), and then ‘Ancient History’ for further information. Do not use general or encyclopedic style websites as sources. By ‘modern scholarship’ we mean work published in academic journals or monographs. Do not copy text from an online source: you must write your own essay.

Note carefully that Turnitin will detect text copied from an online source or from an essay previously submitted.

Your essay must reference the ancient evidence and secondary literature thoroughly. Please refer to the Department of Ancient History’s guide to referencing and essay presentation, available in the unit’s website. You are also required to include a bibliography of all ancient and modern items consulted.

The Ancient History Grade Descriptors. When you are preparing your essay, writing your essay and after you have drafted your essay, take some time to review it with reference to the Grade Descriptors. Try grading it yourself. If necessary, redraft your essay to improve the way it addresses the factors we will be looking for when grading the essay.

Discuss mobile apps for various smart devices

Review the Apple website for mobile apps: http://www.apple.com/osx/apps/app-store.html or any other website with mobile apps for Apple or Google.

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper on the following topic:

Review and discuss mobile apps for various smart devices and highlight one or two mobile apps you think will be useful to you.

SLP Assignment Expectations

Your paper should be 2-3 pages in length and reflect your personal experiences with the topic. The important part of all these project assignments is to carefully assess your own experiences with the topic, and then reflect critically on what you might have learned about yourself and about situations through this assessment process.

The more that you can use the exercise to develop personal implications for your growth as a potential businessperson as well as a knowledge user, the more value you will get out of the exercise.

Your paper will be evaluated on the following criteria:

Precision: You carried out the exercise as assigned, or carefully explained the limitations that might have prevented your completing some parts (running out of time is not generally considered an adequate limitation).

Clarity: Your answers are clear and show your good understanding of the topic.

Breadth and Depth: The scope of your paper is directly related to the questions of the assignment and the learning outcomes of the module.

Critical thinking: The paper incorporates your reactions, examples, and applications of the material to business that illustrate your reflective judgment and good understanding of the concepts.

Explain the importance of situating a societys cultural

Choose one (1) of the topics below and develop a three to four (3-4) paragraph essay (of at least 250-500 words) which adequately address the topic you have chosen.

Topic Choices

There have been many theories regarding how the pyramids at Giza were constructed. Most experts agree that they were constructed as burial monuments for pharaohs, but “how” these ancient people constructed monuments of such great size without modern machinery is a mystery which is still being debated.

No one can say for certain what happened to the great urban Mayan civilization, but theories abound and include varied possible alternatives to explain the relatively abrupt and mysterious disappearance of the Mayan civilization.

Tutankhamen died young, at approximately eighteen (18) years of age. However, his cause of death has been the subject of quite varied scholarly theories and conclusions. Did he die of an injury, of illness, of murder, or something else?.

Minoan Crete was a major civilization in its time, but several theories have been advanced to explain its demise, including speculations associating it with mythical Atlantis. What were the causes of Minoan Civilization’s decline?

Great Zimbabwe is an enormous complex of structures in East Africa. Since the builders and occupants left no written records, several theories have developed as to the identity of its builders and the functions of the structures. Which theory makes the most sense?

The monumental size and complexity of the Tomb of Shihuangdi is astounding, yet its location and construction details were to be kept secret. What was the emperor’s purpose for such an elaborate, secret burial place?

Other topic choice recommended and approved by the professor and supported by the grading rubric.

Write a three to four (3-4) paragraph paper in which you:

Clearly state the “mystery” and provide a brief summary of at least two (2) reasonable and scholarly theories which could explain the mystery. Because some theories may sound far-fetched, include the source or promoter of each theory – such as a scientist, a historian, a theologian, etc.

After summarizing at least two (2) scholarly theories, identify one (1) of the theories as the most plausible and provide at least two (2) convincing reasons why the theory you have chosen is the best one to explain the mystery. This will involve some critical reasoning skills on your part.

Use at least two (2) sources plus the class textbook. (Three [3] sources total as the minimum) Note: Wikipedia and other similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources. You are highly encouraged to use the Resource Center tab at the top of your Blackboard page.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA style format. Both in-text citations and a References list are required. Citations and references must follow APA style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. (Note: Students can find APA style materials located in the course shell for guidance).

Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length. For our purposes, you may omit any abstract page.

Explain the social- political and economic factors

This week, through our readings and discussion, we have had the opportunity to study the rise of China and India and how they evolved into an eastern cultural system that stressed a subordination of the self to a collective group. In addition, we have addressed the following course objectives:

Explain the social, political, and economic factors that were involved in the development of early Eastern complex societies.

Express an understanding of the Eastern Culture that developed in China, India, and elsewhere in Asia and resulted in the advance of the modern global civilizations.

In your reflection journal this week, in 150 words or more, reflect back on what you have learned so far through the course readings, assignment, quiz/exam, and in our discussion, and how that learning relates to the weekly course objectives.

Consider the following questions to help guide your reflection:

What, if anything, did you find surprising, particularly challenging, interesting, or useful?

From what you know about this course so far, what connections can you make to previous learning experiences, and how do you think this course will help you as you move forward in your college and professional life?

How do the course outcomes for this week apply to your experience so far?

What questions do you still need answered?

The report will require students to review three (2) existing safety and health regulatory problems affecting general industry or construction firms that have been published in journals or Safety Magazines. Each article abstract should include a bibliography and an executive summary of the occupational safety and health regulatory compliance issue. The executive summary shall include the safety or health regulatory problem and counter-measure(s) or strategies taken to address problem. If no counter-measures or strategies are presented in the article, then recommend a counter-measure that you think would solve the problem based on the knowledge you gained in the course.
Research existing safety and health regulatory problems in your specific field of study: Construction engineering student you are required to review an existing construction safety and health regulatory issue.
Environment, Safety & Health (ESH) students or from other similar disciplines (public health, radiation health physics), you are required to review an existing general industry safety and health regulatory issue.
