You have just read a chapter on understanding your point-of-view or the lens through which you see the world. You are not usually conscious of this lens. The way you see the world is based on influences from family, friends, neighborhoods, even the part of Maryland you live. There are also broader cultural forces, such as race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, and media, influencing your beliefs, values, and attitudes. And, of course, you have your own experiences and emotional responses. So you will begin to answer this question: Why do you react to X the way you do? You will also gain experience communicating your understanding through clear writing.
