Critical Reading and Critique
Now that we have looked at writing an effective summary, we are able to identify the purpose, structure, and thesis in an article, and also able to formulate our own thesis. We will be studying Chapter 2 this week, with focus on critical reading and writing to help further direct you in this goal, and the eventual synthesis assignments. The critique assignment requires that students both understand what they have read and evaluate it. Therefore, to succeed in evaluating what you have read, it is best to summarize some articles pertaining to the topic of the critique before attempting the critique itself.
In creating a critique, ask youself what assumptions the author holds, and then determine whether those assumptions are valid. You do this by asking whether the information presented is accurate and significant, whether the information has been presented logically and fairly, and whether the author has defined key terms clearly and unambiguously. Only after you have answered these questions and made notes should you proceed with writing the critique.
For the assignment this week, I would like you to look at three essays on Cinderella and the story's effect on society.
Note that the "critique" does not necessarily mean a harsh attack on something, but rather an evaluation or an assessment, that can be positive.

Writing Assignment: Write a 2-3 page critique in APA format of either "Cinderella" by Grimm on page 240 or "The Rough-Faced Girl" by Oochigeaskw on page 245.
