Political system – Senators and Members of Congress

Subject: Political Science    / General Political Science
Question
In our political system, Senators and Members of Congress face very difficult expectations. Whenever they consider what actions to take on a matter of public policy, they must reconcile the interests and pressure from the party leadership in their chamber or on their respective committees, the lobbying efforts and the promise of campaign contributions of interest groups, the needs and demands of their constituents, as well their own personal beliefs and positions. Given a system with such competing sources of pressure, is it reasonable to expect that legislators truly "represent" the electorate? Is this
democratic ideal of representation really plausible? In this day and age, do we really want true representation? What changes could be made to the system to help overcome these issues?
