Dr. Maria Montessori was the founder of Montessori education. This method of education stresses the importance of respecting children. She discovered the studies of Jean Itard and Édouard Séguin and believed that medicine was not the answer, but rather education. Rudolf Steiner, founder of Waldorf Schools, was a contemporary of Maria Montessori, and they shared the same views even though their methods of teaching were different.
They both developed the science of education based on the observation of children’s needs. They both emphasized on the need for holistic education that developed a child mentally, physically, psychologically and spiritually over the traditional classroom curriculum. They stressed on the importance of a natural environment and valued the rich variety of dance, music, art and theater for all age groups.
