Provide textual evidence to support your claims (direct quotations from the texts). Check your syllabus and course discussions to help you focus your responses. Be specific and be sure to develop an appropriate workable thesis. Make sure you determine what you think each author’s meaning is when you analyze aspects of the texts. (Meaning = theme). Correct grammar usage counts!!!! Important Note: Please show some range and use a different author in Part 3 from the one you considered in Part 2. 1. Language and Symbol Write an essay in which you analyze one author’s particular use of language – including symbols, metaphors, and images. How does the language deliver/elucidate/create the meaning or themes of the work? A good choice for this essay would be: Sexton, Brooks, Krysl, Gilman, and your first day poetry packet authors (including Auden, Dickinson, Williams). If you’re feeling confident, any of our authors can be used here. 2. Gender Analyze the roles of women in one of our texts. How are women portrayed and what does this portrayal indicate about the author’s perspective? Consider how the work reflects and illuminates social conditions, the uses of power, and relations between the sexes. Williams, Brooks, Sexton, Gilman, and any of our birthing narratives (non-key texts Pollack, Harjo, Derricotte. Verosick, will work well here). 3. The Healing Arts Analyze the description of illness and healing in one of our texts. What is the nature of the illness described? What is the nature of the treatment? What is the author’s perspective on the effectiveness of the treatment described? What values, social norms, and/or psycho-social dynamics does the author reveal in his/her depiction of the healing process? Williams, Bulgakov, Krysl, Gilman, and Brown, Mora, Harjo, Voget and Mee (some of these are authors non-key texts) would all be good choices here. 1. Illness and Society Analyze the social influences on illness and wellness in one of our texts. How does the society itself – social norms, social attitudes, social values, social structures – impact health? How does the author present the conflict between the individual and the society? What ails the protagonist? What is the author’s perspective on how the individual is influenced by society? Is the author critical of societal values? Does the author seem to advocate for any kind of change? (Gilman, Krysl, Brooks, and Brown would be good choices here).
