Why do hurricanes rotate counter-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere

Answer this one question: Why do hurricanes rotate counter-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere? Note- this seems the opposite of what you would expect from the Coriolis Effect. (Word limit 300 words minimum).
