In 1971, psychologist Philip Zimbardo and his colleagues set up an experiment to study the impact of group behavior and group processes. This experiment was called the Stanford Prison Experiment. In this experiment, 24 students were selected to play prisoners and prison guards in a mock prison. As the study progressed, Zimbardo and his colleagues observed dramatic changes in the participants' behavior. The prisoners' behavior became passive while the prison guards began displaying aggressive behavior.

Discuss which societal and group factors may have influenced the behavior of the "guards" and "prisoners"? Why did they each take on their roles so quickly and completely?
Discuss whether it was ethical to conduct this study.
Have you ever done something in a group that you would not have done if you were alone? Share at least one such incident from your personal or professional life.
