Exploring Perspectives of Race
Subject: General Questions / General General Questions
Question
This reflection provides an opportunity for you to explore your original definition of race (the one you had in mind BEFORE starting this class) in light of the course content covered thus far. Question 6 is a great place to reflect on your changing definition of ‘race’. Your reflective writing should be 3-4 double-spaced pages (750-1,000 words) 12pt Times New Roman font.
Exploring Perspectives of Race
How did you define race for the first day of class?
What ‘race’ do you identify with (think ‘census form’)?
Is your ‘race’ the same as your ethnic and cultural heritage (what are some foods, celebrations, rituals, clothing, etc. that are meaningful to you and symbolized in your ethnic/cultural background)?
Based on the definition in Smedley and Smedley, how are ‘race’ and ethnicity similar/different? [SEE CLARIFICATION ON THESE DEFINITIONS PP. 27-32 in Smedley and Smedley].
How is the race ideology outlined in your text (see page 25-26) (list all five elements).
Use this question to reflect on how the course information thus far (lecture/reading/film) has begun to challenge (or reinforce) your previous notions of ‘race’.
What (if any) elements of the race ideology do you see in your initial definition of race (first day of class)? What (if any) elements of theirethnicity definitiondo you see in your definition of race? Did thefilmpresent any information that challenged (or reinforced) your current concept of race?
If you don’t see any elements of the race ideology from Smedley and Smedley in your original definition, can you identify a time when your definition of race used to include them (i.e., has your definition of race changed over time)?
I am using a 5 point scale (total 25 pts) to assess your reflective writings within three categories. The criteria for each point value are described in the rubric below. In general, however, the levels of achievement are as follows:
4.5 – 5=abovestandard(90-100%)
4=atstandard(80%)
3.5=approachingstandard(70%)
3=belowstandard(60%)
