Double-consciousness

Double-consciousness

1. What is "double-consciousness" and how does Du Bois theorize that it afflicts one's African-American identity by tearing it in two? How do you see his theory demonstrated in ONLY ONE of the following instances (give an example from the text): Please use the attachment below to answer just question one.

• The Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement
• Early Black Education Movements in the United States
• The Civil Rights Movement
• Black Military Service
• The Struggles of Black Politicians.

Any time period or example between 1877 and the present is acceptable to discuss for this question.
2. How have African Americans used religions and religious institutions not only as a centers of faith, but as sources of survival and activism since 1877?
(Do not limit yourselves to discussions of Christianity in the text)

3. How has black political involvement changed since 1877? What changed--as far as voting patterns and who was elected-- when African-Americans were finally granted full suffrage with the Voting Rights Act of 1965?

(Note: Be certain that you compose a brief survey of the political history between 1877 and 1965, and that you do NOT just focus on those two years. Your response should deal with the development of this political activity.)

4. How has African-American art (visual art, poetry, literature, music, etc.) created spaces of activism and intellectualism of issues facing this group? How has the hip hop movement evolved out of this tradition of black creativity?

Any time period or example between 1877 and the present is acceptable to discuss for this question.

Instructions for the questions.
• Each response should be 5 to 7 lines of text in length OR at least 200 words. Give yourselves time to meet these requirements to avoid failing or grade reduction (there will be NO do-overs).
• Some people have submitted their answers within the RICH TEXT EDITORS (as they would for weekly forums) OR as separate attachments per question, while others opt to compile all of the exam questions and responses into ONE document. EITHER WAY IS FINE, AS LONG AS YOU ANSWER THE QUESTIONS (also depending on the options that Sakai offers). Also, if you are attaching files, save your exam documents ONLY as .doc, .docx, or .rtf files using your word processor programs (Word, Open Office, Pages, etc.)
• CITE YOUR SOURCES (Chicago Style)!! ALL OF THEM! Do not copy and paste FULL responses from your textbooks; the questions themselves should make this impossible. Remember this paper will be turned in for plagiarism check.
