Week 6: Tools to Resolve Conflict
Week Introduction:
Accepting responsibility for what you say and how you communicate your feelings is an important communication skill to acquire. Many people lack the effective communication skills and tools to properly deal with conflict. When engaged in conflict, an effective tool to use is the I-Statement, where the communicator takes responsibility for his or her part in the conflict. It is important to have tools such as this when dealing with conflict, because if the leader is not an effective communicator already or does not handle conflict well, the tools provide assistance in developing an argument and ideas for resolution that can be communicated effectively.

Section 4: Conflict Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Forgiveness entails an individual letting go of the past, whereas reconciliation focuses an individual on committing to a future. Unlike forgiveness, which entails words, reconciliation goes beyond words and seeks to commit an individual to action whereby relationships are restored and perhaps reimagined. Although forgiveness is the first step in the process, it is important that individuals within an organization are able to reconcile and move forward to restore any relationships that may have been affected negatively by conflict. This is something leaders should be able to assist employees with, as it is important to the continued positive culture of the organization and high employee morale.
