Folk Artist Ammi Phillips Folk Artists have small amount of or no formal art education (P. Frank, 2014, p.7) Ammi Phillips born 04/24/1788 and died 07/11/1865 ( http://www.newenglandhistoricalsociety.com/) Ammi Phillips is known for early Folk Art Portraits. His most notable piece is: “Girl in Red dress with Cat and Dog” which was
featured on a U.S postage stamp in 1998. (http://www.thegreatcat.org/) Phillips has painted hundreds of portraits in his lifetime. INTRODUCTION:
Folk Artist Ammi Phillips I chose to do this project on Ammi Phillips because his Portraits interests
me. I would like to find out how his Portraits evolved and/or more detailed as
he aged with time. I would like to learn more about the Artist and what inspired him to do

Dog Line Shape Mass- The majority of the painting is the girl’s figure. Time Motion- There does not seem to be any motion in the
picture. Color- The use of the Primary Color “Red” draws attention to the
focal point of the portrait. Texture- The figures sleek dress is accompanied with
finely detailed ridges around the cuffs and ankles. Lady In Gold Color Dress

Oil on canvas Lady In Gold Color Dress Line- the lines look symmetrical, notice the “part in her hair”,
right shoulder and left forearm. Shape- they’re a lot of box like or square shapes through
out the painting. Mass Time Motion Color- The light colors used in the facial portion enhance
the detail of the piece. Texture- Florence Maria Carter

infants hand, it indicates to me the child would not keep
still. Color- The dark colors used in the background bring out
the Texture- Blond Boy with Primer, Peach, and Dog

boy. Hard to tell where the background ends and the
boys body begins. Texture- A Young Boy in Plaid with Dog

Color – what colors are used? are the colors bright, tints, muted? different shades of one hue?
Texture – is there a pattern on some area in the artwork? is there a paint texture such as impasto?
Mass – is the artwork heavier in one area?
Time – is there anything in the artwork that gives the sense of time? is it a daytime or night time scene?
Motion – is motion depicted? Are people walking, running, floating, or climbing toward something?
