Students will be expected to submit a short paper assignment in order to meet the Title V upper division writing requirements for the course. The paper is expected to
be a well thought-out and researched response to the topic:
Clearly and extensively explain the Electoral College system. How does it work? Why do we have the system? List at least 4-6 pros and cons of the Electoral College.
What are your thoughts; which side do you agree with and why? Do you think we should maintain, reform, or completely do away with the existing system? Make sure to
back up your statements with well-researched facts.
The papers are to be a minimum of 6-7 pages long. You will have the option of rewriting your first paper for a higher grade after initial comments and grading have
been completed.
Make sure to include academic references and utilize the proper APA format. You may refer to the APA manual for formatting and citation requirements. Purdue
University’s Online Writing Lab is a good source for general APA guidelines and can be found at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01. In addition, two
useful Web-based tools that may be used to help generate citations include:
Son of Citation Machine – http://citationmachine.net/index2.php
The KniteCite Citation Service – http://www.calvin.edu/library/knightcite/index.php
You will need to submit a hard copy of your paper to me either in class during our next class meeting this week or you may submit a hard copy to the political science
office on or before our next scheduled class meeting/date when the paper is due. If you decide to submit the paper to the political science department, make sure to
have them time stamp it and place it in my mailbox. Each day a paper is submitted late, it will be marked down a point. Please note, the last time I will be on campus
to pickup the papers will be on Friday at 1:45pm. After that the University will be on recess for spring break.
