Question
Literature writing paper, a 5 pages long from book “Iliad ” by Homer.

Compose a paper that answers one of the following two topics.
1. For centuries, there was widespread scholarly consensus that ancient Greeks loved to
fight wars. In the last twenty years, this conclusion has been the subject of a fair bit of
scrutiny, and the matter is no longer considered settled. Settle this debate. According to
the Iliad, did the ancient Greeks love war?
2. Over the course of Books I-XII, both Agamemnon and Zeus’ leadership styles change,
significantly. Select either Agamemnon or Zeus and (1) explain how their leadership style
changes and (2) explain how these changes alleviate problems that plagued their
respective civilization in Book I.
Formatting
Papers are to be 5 pages long, give or take 1/2 of a page; double-spaced; having 1”
margins at top and bottom and 1.25” margins on the left and right; and written in 12 point
Times New Roman font.
Spelling and Grammar
If there are numerous, significant grammatical or spelling errors in your paper, then we
are not going to grade it. Instead, we will send it back to you. You will have 48 hours to
edit it and send it back to us. Your paper grade will also fall by 10%. If there are still
issues, we will repeat this process.
By “significant grammatical error,” I do not mean using a colon where you should have
used a semi-colon. Likewise should you write Agamennon instead of Agamemnon, that is
unfortunate but understandable. I mean things like flagrant splleen ishoos (i.e., spelling
issues), rampant noun-verb disagreement, and writing in incomplete sentences. Just read
your papers before you submit them, and this won’t be an issue. 1
Rubric
You will notice that the percentages below add up to well over 100%. This is because
those numbers reflect how much you can lose for each type of error. The benefit of this
system is that you start at 100% and go down for mistakes. A more traditional rubric
starts you at 0% and makes you work upwards.
Style and Structure:
100% The basics: Do you have a real introduction or a series of platitudes? Do
you have an argument? Do you support this argument with textual
evidence? How coherently arranged is your paper?
15% Do not ever use the English word “feel” to mean “think.” “To feel”
pertains to emotions and touching things. 80% Do the things you say make sense? Do you contradict yourself? Logic: Argument:
10% 70% Do you have a thought provoking argument that addresses the
complexities of the question or do you boil everything down to a very
simple statement (e.g., Homer’s gods are unjust)?
Does the rest of your paper support your argument? It is
possible to have a good argument and a series of good points, but if you
don’t make clear what the connection is between those points and your
argument then that’s a major problem. Evidence:
100% Use of textual evidence. Don’t say things like “Achilles was a generally
angry person” without including evidence (in the form of a citation or
quote) to support that claim. The only exception to this is your thesis;
the
the rest of your paper is the evidence/support for this. If you’re not sure
whether or not something needs a citation to support it, err on the side of
providing a citation.
Titles and Names:
10% Do not misspell the authors’ names or the texts’ titles. 2
