Background

The journal article is titled “Psychologists Report Large Increase in Demand for Anxiety and Depression Treatment.” The survey was conducted by Sophie Bethune located at the institution of the American Psychological Association. The journal published on November 17th, 2020 builds upon a previous research conducted on the same subject in June 2020. In terms of age group, the study was conducted among practicing psychologists in the early, mid, and late stages of their careers. The survey which took place between August 28th and October 2020 can be described as a correlational study. It is a correlational study because it adopts a non-experimental approach whereby the researcher studies two variables and analyzes the statistical relationship that exists between them with little control of extraneous variables (Xiao, Carney, Youn, Janis, Castonguay, Hayes, & Locke 2017). The approach to research in this study is purely descriptive and does not rely heavily on hypothesis formulation and testing as in scientific research.

Summary of Methodology

The article focuses on the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the increased cases of patients with depression-related conditions and the changes to the service delivery to patients by practicing psychologists. According to the survey, about six months into the pandemic, many psychologists admitted to seeing more patients presenting with depression and anxiety according to the Telehealth Practitioner Survey on covid-19 done by the American Psychological Association. In regards to methodology, the practitioner survey was disseminated to a sample that was geographically representative of practicing psychologists in the USA including both members and non-members of the American Psychological Association. Worth noting, the fieldwork of this survey took place from August 28th, 2020 to 5th October 2020. Out of the total number of psychologists reached, a total of 1787 responded to the survey. Noteworthy, the sample was a non-probability sample hence it is impossible to compute the margins of error or confidence intervals.

Summary of Results

Data collected from the survey confirmed the institution’s worst fear, that the pandemic was taking a heavy emotional toll on Americans. This is according to the institution’s Chief Executive Officer. In responding to the unprecedented mental health crisis, most psychologists were getting more referrals, seeing more patients and experiencing fewer cancellations. Further, it was noted that more psychologists had embraced telehealth as they began treating patients remotely. Results from the September survey indicated that most psychologists reported seeing an increased number of patients with depressive disorders accounting for 60% and anxiety disorders accounting for 74% compared to before the pandemic began. Moreover, other treatments that recorded a significant increase in patients included sleep-wake disorder and stress-related disorder. Additionally, according to the survey, 37% of the psychologists which accounts for more than one-third of the total psychologists revealed that they received more patient referrals compared to before the pandemic. Moreover, 44% admitted to recording fewer cancellations or no-shows. The survey further revealed that compared to pre-covid days, 43% of psychologists said that they were attending to the same number of patients, 29% said they were attending to more clients, and 28% reported seeing fewer patients. Most psychologists reported that they did not see any notable changes in the patient variations recorded with specific ethnic and racial groups. However, 9% of psychologists reported an increase in attending to patients of Asian origin while 11% recorded an increase in seeing African American patients. Further, 19% of the psychologist reported attending to White patients and 8% revealed they were seeing more patients with Hispanic patients. 21% of the psychologist revealed that they were attending to more adolescents aged 13-17 after the covid-19 pandemic while 29% revealed that were attending to more adults between 18 and 64 years. Moreover, revealed that 17% attended the older adult patients between 65-79 years while 30% noted that they attended to fewer children that were below 13 years. 63% of the psychologist treated all patients remotely while 32% conducted in-person treatment. Worth noting, 63% of the psychologist reported remote treatment to be more challenging than in-person treatment, 26% recorded a fair amount of challenges, 58% reported few challenges while 16% experienced no challenges relating to telehealth.

Questions Raised by the Study

This study raises the question of the direction that health service delivery is taking and the need to invest and employ technology as a tool to improve community health. Without a doubt, the covid-19 pandemic is an unprecedented issue that prompted us to seek alternative ways to health care delivery. When the pandemic emerged, doctors had to e creative to ensure they went on with their work without exacerbating the spread of the virus. Although telehealth is challenging, the pandemic has taught us that it is doable. The focus now should be on devising ways to make the telehealth experience better and even adopting it as a means of treatment even after the pandemic is over. There is need to invest in policy formulations to regulate telehealth services.

Journal Entry 1 – Chapter 3 Communication and the Self

Journal Entry 1 – Chapter 3 Communication and the Self

Journal Entry 1 – Chapter 3 Communication and the Self

For all individuals, communication is key in determining who an individual really is, and therefore, it helps define oneself. The presence of social media has increased our communications with one another, not only with families but also with friends. These platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, have helped us identify our public self, in that we opt to show a particular part of ourselves to the public while keeping that which we don’t want to be seen in private. Based on this, we choose to disclose some things which we perceive as relevant in relational development. How we communicate and perceive ourselves tends to affect our self-esteem – the evaluations of self-worth; therefore, it affects how we communicate with those around us.

Self-concept is defined as the relatively stable set of perceptions that an individual holds about themselves. This implies that self-concept is crucial in determining our personalities, including attributes of whom an individual is in their normal mood states, likes, dislikes, special talents, or roles. An individual’s personality determines their self-worth, which means how individuals feel about certain qualities may have to do with their self-esteem. I believe that the type of parenting affects both the self-concept and self-esteem of an individual as they grow, and this means that the childhood of a person is essential in shaping their self-worth. Authoritative parenting allows very little interaction of their children as they live in a controlled environment. However, there are democratic parents who allow their children freedom to do as they wish; they trust their children to make major decisions about themselves and make them responsible for their choices. Such a child grows to have strong self-worth and self-esteem compared to a child who had no freedom to choose.

Children brought in authoritative parenting will always look for approval from others as they don’t know how it is like to be independent. However, an individual with a strong self-concept and self-esteem tends to have positive thoughts, which they use to develop desirable behaviors. If a person feels good about themselves, they pose positive expectations about how they will communicate with those around them. There is a high likelihood that their communications will be successful. Having successful communication can help an individual develop positive evaluations of self, which increases their level of self-esteem. Therefore, positive evaluations can be a key determinant as well as a beginning for developing positive communications with others. Communications cannot be successful if the wrong strategy is applied; therefore, if an individual wants to improve how other people perceive them, they have to devise a strategy that will impress others. Based on this, impression management is another key element in developing conversations as it helps increase thoughtfulness, self-awareness, honesty, and understanding of personal emotions. However, impressions need to be guided by authenticity. Therefore, it is important for an individual to be self-aware of themselves before engaging in a conversation so that they don’t play the role that is not theirs.

Thoughtfulness and being an efficient listener help understand the other person’s perspective. Therefore, it is essential that before conversing back, an individual should evaluate the consequences of their feedback to avoid negative implications that could ruin relationships with others. Being conscious and thoughtful can improve personal relationships with others. Self-disclosure is also an important part of effective communication as it helps reveal information about the self to another person. It can be used to bring a sense of psychological belief, making an individual feel better when they get a burden out of their chest. However, if an individual is not careful in self-disclosure, they might spill too much information that could be toxic and thus lead to rejection. Therefore, it is essential to understand the limits and disclose only information whose damage can be controlled to ensure effective communication. A close observation of these rules can help an individual better understand the self.

Antigone is an idealistic character caught between doing what is morally right or obeying political laws. Antigone finds herself in this position after Creon prohibits the burial of one of her brothers. Based on the play, it is apparent that Antigone prioritizes the laws of the gods, and her desire to bury her brother, who was named a traitor, stems from her strong sense of family loyalty. Unlike Antigone’s priorities, her sister’s and uncle’s priorities are focused on political expediency hence their unrelenting stance in going against the laws of the gods. The conflict between Antigone and Creon results in the tragic demise of Antigone and multiple family members related to her. Creon also regrets his choices and laments that everything he has touched has amounted to nothing. Antigone is a tale that highlights the differences between political laws and moral laws and calls to attention the need for people to prioritize morals. While both Antigone and Creon ended up losing a lot, their choices highlight the possible implications of following either moral laws or political laws. While Antigone’s demise is tragic, I believe that the play highlights the limitations of political laws. For instance, Creon’s laws are dictatorial as they disregard human ties. As a result, Creon’s disregard for Antigone’s family obligations results in the loss of his own family. The play also reveals the complexity of life. It challenges the audience to stand for what is right as opposed to blindly following laws that judge people’s actions on an unrealistic dual system of black and white.

Discuss how this story helps explain how communication helps us build and maintain interpersonal relationships.

Sample Journal Entry Question: Give an example of a situation when you explained someone else’s behavior. Examine how you used attribution theory – specifically examine external attributes, chance, and internal attributes. Did you make a fundamental attribution error? Why or why not?

5 point answer:Attribution theory helps us examine why people communicate or behave in the way they do. So, attribution theory helps us better understand communication events. People often find themselves in situations that lead them to attempt to explain the unusual behavior of another person. When this happens, we look at external attributes, chance, and internal attributes. External attributes offer a reason for the communication that is outside of the person’s personality, such as someone being too busy or being sick. Internal attributes are when the communication is the result of someone’s personality or who they are. For example, someone might just be always late or isn’t kind. Chance is when neither internal or external attributes happen and can be confusing to understand. Sometimes we can mis-attribute a reason for a communication behavior. We call this a fundamental attribution error, and it happens often when we blame an internal cause when it’s really an external cause. For example, if someone doesn’t respond to a text and we think they are mad at us (internal), but in reality, this person is sick (external).

One example of this from my life is when my friend, John, was at our fraternity’s tailgate and was acting more obnoxious than he usually does.  John is a rather off-the-wall and free-minded fellow, but in this situation, he was clearly acting out for a purpose.  I had to explain to a couple of my fraternity brothers that the reason John was acting ridiculous was because the girl that he was dating recently ended things with him, and she happened to be at the tailgate that day.  Clearly, John was acting out because her presence at the tailgate made him uncomfortable.  Also, there was a bit of alcohol in his system, so that also could have been a valid cause for his behavior.  These two causes would be considered external attributes because they are situational factors that influenced his behavior, and this was beyond his normal behavior.  I went on to tell my brothers that I honestly wasn’t sure how long the behavior would last or if it would happen again at next week’s tailgate, because I had no idea what his romantic situation would look like in the future.  This is an example of using chance to explain his behavior.  But based on his internal attributes though, knowing that John is naturally a pretty crazy, obnoxious guy, and that his behavior in this situation was more extreme than his normal nonsense, I could guess that if this did happen in the future, he might act the same way.  I do not believe that I made a fundamental attribution error, as I was careful not to overestimate the internal factors of his behavior while attempting to explain his behavior. His internal factors were not different than normal, just more intense. The external factors of his breakup were clearly causing the intense behavior.

Attribution theory is an important part of the perception process and helps us understand communication events. Attribution theory helps us make a quick decision about what is going on, so we know how to communicate in that situation. We have to be careful and make sure we are not making fundamental attribution errors. Often our perception, and the attributions we make through perception, can be clouded by both gender and culture issues. Perception and attribution theory use stereotypes. And while stereotypes are helpful, they can also be influenced by gender and cultural issues, so we have negative stereotypes. In order to keep from making attribution errors and using our perception in the wrong way, we must be aware of the stereotypes we use and how to make sure we are not using bias stereotypes. If we don’t do this, our relationships will suffer because we can have misunderstandings. Using self-reflection and empathy can help us make sure we use attribution theory correctly, so we don’t damage our relationships.

4 point answer: Example 1: People often find themselves in situations that lead them to attempt to explain the unusual behavior of another person.  One example of this from my life is when my friend, John, was at our fraternity’s tailgate and was acting more obnoxious than he usually does.  John is a rather off-the-wall and free-minded fellow, but in this situation he was clearly acting out for a purpose. These two causes would be considered external attributes because they are situational factors that influenced his behavior.  I went on to tell my brothers that I honestly wasn’t sure how long the behavior would last or if it would happen again at next week’s tailgate, because I had no idea what his romantic situation would look like in the future.  This is an example of using chance to explain his behavior.

His internal factors were not different than normal, just more intense. The external factors of his breakup were clearly causing the intense behavior.

3 point answer:

Chapter 4 defines the attribution theory as: The dominant theory that explains how people explain their own and others’ behavior.  There are three basic assumptions to the attribution theory:

That it is natural for people to attempt to establish the causes of their own and others’ behavior.

That people assign causes for behavior systematically.

That the attribution impacts the perceiver’s feelings and subsequent behavior

I remember one time, not too long ago, my friend and I were supposed to go to lunch because I had not seen her in a long time.  We had a resturaunt picked out and a time to be there.  I showed up at the resturaunt at the designated time, but she was not there.  I waited for her for about an hour, and then gave up and left.  When I tried calling, she never answered and I did not hear from her the next 2 days.  I called one of my team mates to tell her about the incident.  I told my team mate that it is usually not like this friend of mine to not show up.  I told her that she is typically extremely loyal and if she says she is going to be somewhere at a certian time, she shows up.  I also mentioned to her that she is very talkative and outgoing and would not fail to communicate with me if something had come up, or changed.  I started then to jump to conclusions about maybe her getting into an accident, or maybe her car breaking down or something like that.  My team mate, who also knew this friend agreed with me.  She also said that it was not like her not to show up.  She is a very trustworthy person who keeps her word.  When I was finally able to talk to my friend, it turned out that she had dropped her phone in the toilet, locked herself out of her house, and was having car problems.  She apologized for not getting in touch with me, but explained that after everything that happened that day, she just wanted to relax and do nothing.  Understanding completely, I simply told her that it was perfectly fine, and we ended up going to lunch together the following week.

2 point answer:Example 1: When Larry gets really quite, I immediately thinks something wrong or he’s aggravted by something. So I continue to bug him and ask whats wrong until he confrims that its absolutely nothing.

I used attribution theory is this example by explaining my behavior when being mad at something. The external attributes are taking in to consideration that the behavor may be because he’s mad. So taking the situation into consideration that caused this behavior is apart of external attributes.

Yes, I made a fundmental attribution error because just because he not saying anything doean’t necessarily mean hes upset about something or by someone. It can also mean that he just has nothing to say or that he’s just really into whenever it is he doing and watching.

Example 2: My best friend in high school was always the life of the party. She loved to have a good time and everyone really enjoyed her company. Of course I loved her dearly, but when she would get mad she would always take everything out on me. I never understood why she would do that. It wasn’t like she would get just a little angry, she would get angry to the point of a blood vessel popping out in her forehead (which of course I would point out in attempt to lighten the mood). No one ever saw this side of her though. Anytime we wanted to go out or do something, it would always be an ordeal. She never liked how she looked. She would say she was ugly and constantly talked about how “fat” she thought she was. I thought it was crazy! She was in NO way fat. Anything I said was not what she wanted to hear. All this anger she had started to make me feel like she hated me. I felt like I could not say or do anything right. Everytime I saw her I did not know what kind of mood she would be in. Once I started dating this guy, it became even worse. In her mind I never had enough time for her and I just completely forgot about our friendship. I was so confused! She yells at me, she loves me, she hates me, we are best friends, I was losing my mind. I did not know what to do anymore. Finally, I decided enough was enough. We sat down and talked and it was that moment that everything made sense. She did not hate me, in fact, I was the best friend she had ever had. She lost her father at a really young age and because of that, it has always been hard for her to get close to people. She had some anger problems because of what she went through. I began to understand how to react to her. I knew what to say and what not to say. We are still best friends to this day. It was difficult but all relationships are. My father passed away and no one was able to help and understand me like she was. Trying to figure out and understand people’s characteristics is difficult. Most of the time we can’t truely determine why someone is the way they are. Life happens and with that situations happens. You never understand something until you have personally been through it.

1 point answer:once I got in fight with shane. He was like mad at me and I dont evan no why. we stop talking after that time and we still dont talk anymore.

Jane Jacobs’s

Jane Jacobs’s

Jane Jacobs’s “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” talks about city planning. In her work, the author highlights the activities that occur on Hudson Street, where she lives. She effectively demonstrates the day-to-day activities in that street. Therefore, this book is quite applicable to the author. The book describes Jacobs’ daily activities in the street she lives in and the problems that she has encountered there due to a lack of space. In addition, she suggests how various government authorities can do their jobs efficiently by viewing buildings not as pieces of architecture but as useful elements that are employed in a way to solve problems within the city and also how these buildings can be used to solve social ills. In other words, buildings are used as an “urban laboratory”.

The author uses imagery and vivid description to demonstrate the daily activities that occur in the street where she lives in. For example, “In late afternoons, the children who live on Hudson Street are to be seen everywhere. They fill the sidewalks and spill into the street, playing ball and running errands for their mothers”. She also gives vivid descriptions of some of the people who are residents of Hudson Street:

The author says “Two new entrances are being made from the wings: well-dressed and even elegant women and men with brief cases emerge from doorways and side streets.” She describes the improvements being done on the street (Litscher, 2017). She says that “Construction is always underway. Both sides of the street are being repaved, the whole street is being relined with sewers, a whole new electrical and phone system is being installed”. The author speaks about the improvement of Hudson Street. Also, she says “But it (Hudson Street) also has a great potential for becoming as fine an urban neighborhood as any in the country”. Jacobs describes how various buildings on Hudson Street can be used to solve social ills such as isolation, fearfulness, and architectural ugliness. For example, “Isolation is certainly one of the factors which produce fearfulness and makes cities uninhabitable by normal people”.

January 6th Hearings Report

The 6 committee hearings are purposed to accomplish the goal of protecting democracy and the democratic rights of the American citizens. Following the unrest which was caused by the Trump supporters to overturn the election results in 2020, evidences and witnesses have presented to the panel to ensure that the criminals are persecuted accordingly. From the 6 committee hearings, several aspects have been learnt. The aspect is that Donald Trump was strongly involved in the campaigns to overturn the election. Strong evidence proves that Trump was emotionally invested in winning the election and was responsible for destroying the democratic norms. According to Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony, on the 6th of January 2020, Trump had a physical argument with his top security official when he refused to drive him to Capitol, and as a show of intense anger, he even threw a plate of food against the wall in the State House (Oxford Analytica, 2022).

More evidence that relates Trump to the campaigns is that he placed and joined calls to the Republican party officials and state legislatures to convince them to manipulate the election results in his favor. According to Russell Rusty Bowers, Arizona speaker, he received multiple calls from Trump after the election, in which the then president asked him to use his stature in the statehouse to invalidate Joe Biden’s win. Additionally, Ronna McDaniel, a Republican National Committee (RNC) chairwoman has recorded a testimony that implies the former president’s participation in the fake-voters scheme (Oxford Analytica, 2022).

Trumps criminal actions were out of his own intention. After the election, his close aides and appointees told him that he had lost in free and fair elections. According to Attorney General William Barr’s testimony, he had 3 discussions with Trump in which he informed the former president that the elections were free and fair, and they had not been stollen. The three discussions were held in between late November to early December 2020 (Oxford Analytica, 2022). Also, Jason Miller, a senior official in Trump’s two campaigns, recorded a testimony stating that Matt Oczkowski, one of the lead data experts bluntly informed the former president that he was bound for defeat according to the election figures. Bill Stepien, Trump’s campaign manager also noted about the same post-election conversation, stating that Trump had been informed about his chances of winning being minimal. Despite being informed that no fraudulent activities had been made to prevent his success in the elections, Trump showed a clear disinterest in the reports and still planned for the post-election campaigns to reject Biden’s win.

The hearings also established concrete evidence which show that Republican members of the congress participated in the election-reversal plot. Several congresspeople sought pardon from the president weeks before January 6 to participate in reversing Biden’s win. Some of the House Republicans who sought the president’s pardon include Matt Gaetz, Mo Brooks, and Marjorie Taylor-Greene (Oxford Analytica, 2022). Trump reportedly issued the congressmen pardons as well as those who voted to oppose the election results on January 6. Cassidy Hutchins’ recorded testimony states that Meadows and Giuliani also sought the president’s pardon to participate in the objection of election results.

Threats from Trump and his associates were imposed against election officials and their families. Fake election claims by Trump and his supporters caused the former election officials to undergo thorough investigations which exposed them to intense abuse and fear. The attacks were mainly focused on targeting top Republican officials who refused to participate in the election-reversal scheme and instead supported the integrity of the poll elections. Al Schmidt, former Republican city commissioner of Philadelphia reported that threats against him and his family raised after Trump mentioned his name on tweeter. Republicans who acknowledged the election’s integrity were referred to as Republican-in-name-only (RINO) which made them viewed as the party’s traitors (Oxford Analytica, 2022). Civil servants who participated in the democratic elections were also negatively affected. For instance, Shaye Moss and her mother, Ruby Freeman, who faced false information against their roles which led them to face threats leading them into hiding. Moss stated that the threats and situation almost led her to not resume her service due to the bullying that she faced.

Elected officials of the Republican party who opposed Trump’s actions issued explanations why they did not support the campaign to reject Biden’s elections. The officials reported that they were committed to abide by the democratic laws than to commit to the desires of a single man. They chose to save the country than impress their political party. The committee hearings are meant to prevent the occurrence of a similar situation which would risk the lives of the American citizens in the future (Berry, 2022). Election opposers who intend to mislead future votes and bound to prosecution and imprisonment. The panel officials have noted that the hearings will not only help to solve the past, but also serve as a warning in the future (Berry, 2022).

Japan’s Tourism Industry Marketing

Tourism can be defined as the travel that is done for either pleasure or the organization or instead for business. It is an activity that has become part of very many people’s day to day activities as millions of people in the world use their free time or the leisure time for traveling and visiting their places of interest. Just like any other industry in a country and the world; generally, tourism has flourished in various countries, and Japan happens to be one of them (Berger, 2010). Japan is known to be an island country that is found in East Asia. It is even ranked as the fourth out of the 142 countries overall and happens to be the best in Asia.

Tourism in Japan just like in any other country has played a significant role in the overall economic growth as well as playing a vital role in the upholding of the Japanese culture. In the year 2010, there were about 2.4 million people who visited Japan, and this amounts to about 27% of the tourists in the country this year. Chinese are recorded to be the highest spenders in this country as tourists. In the years between 1995 to around the end of the year 2012, it is said that Japan’s tourists increased by around 6% whereby it had risen from 3.3 million to up to about 8.4 million (Uzama, 2009). In late 2017, the number of tourists in Japan had significantly increased to around 28.7 million which has never been experienced in the past years. It is foreseen that the tourism industry would soon become the engine motivation for the economic growth of Japan (Jimura &Takamitsu, 2011). This country has around 21 sites that are known heritage world sites. This industry has helped in creating job opportunities in the country. As per today, the tourism industry in Japan has created an approximate of 4.2 million jobs which represent about 6.4 % of the Japanese employment.

It is also a dream for the country that when it comes to 2020, more than 4.5 million jobs in the country would be purely based on this industry of travel and tourism. Tourism as an industry is known to help in the following:

Help in the boosting of the economy or instead helps in the economic growth

It has also helped in the growth of unity and oneness in the societies

It is also a significant source of employment in many countries especially in Japan where it has created millions of jobs.

The tourism industry can generally be said to have helped in the enriching of many lives of Japanese. For the areas that act as the tourist attractors or the so-called the tourist attraction areas, they have expanded and grown and thus helping in the development of Japan and many countries in the world as a whole (Nozawa, 1992). A good marketing plan, strategies or rather all the activities encompassed in the marketing work ensures that any organization or business has done well and therefore, the tourism industry is of no exception at all. For the tourism industry of Japan to continue growing and flourishing well, then it is of great importance the marketing work of this country be looked at keenly.

The marketing strategies and the marketing plan should not be left out as well when the overall marketing work is being looked. Marketing plan as a vital tool in the field of business and marketing to be specific is a well-known strategic document and helps in foreseeing of the coming financial year, and sometimes it can be a month. A marketing plan helps an organization or industry is focusing its resources, and it also helps in tracing of growth of success of an organization.

Many factors will and have always affected the success of a business, and therefore, market planning helps in understanding the different elements. It is the marketing plan that allows a company in setting its goals and objectives. During the planning, the organization can set the objectives and goals that are in line with laid out strategies. Looking at Tokyo which is a major foreigner attraction in Japan, then we can be able to analyze its marketing work and see how it has been effective in this region as well as what needs to be done or rather improved to improve the results or the performance (Uzama, 2009). Marketing plan as an essential tool in the marketing plan as earlier mentioned, it is made up of various components which are very crucial in the planning.

Tourism is a source of revenue in Japan and therefore, it is right to conclude that it is a business and thus just like any other business, then it’s necessary to analyze its marketing plan and strategy. For any given market and this matter the tourism industry, Tokyo, in Japan should ensure that it has created a variety of destinations and tourist attraction areas to ensure that the people who visit t this country have varieties of tourist attraction sites.

It is also crucial that the country Japan, tries to collect data or conduct research and find out what their customers want and also what they lack about their interests and it’s after this that they can be able to satisfy their needs and wishes. Objectives and goals are a necessity for any organization to succeed (Yasuda, 2010). This is because, it is one of the few ways of measuring the success of a business and therefore, the tourism industry in Japan should be able to set realistic objectives and which they should all work into achieving them. Many resources are always wasted when an individual or a business cultivate it in a place where is not much important. Therefore, when a company or an industry come up with unique and relevant tourist areas, then they can invest their resources where they are needed and avoid wastage of resources as well as time that would have been involved in unnecessary destinations.

Good marketing should be composed of various components which are as mentioned below, and each of them will later be discussed about the Japan tourism industry.

The Set Objectives

The environment of the industry

Market strategy

Region or the country profile

Market identification

The set budget

Implementation

Evaluation.

For an industry or business to be successful, then each of the segments mentioned above should be put into consideration and as well be worked upon to give the best results for the business. When one of them is violated or is not aligned according to the market strategies, then the whole company may be prone to collapsing (Leung, & Baloglu, 2013). It’s then important to look at them individually.

The Set Objectives.

It is quite necessary for any organization or industry to set its objectives and goals to have a guideline. It helps the industry in striving to achieve the set goals and in return would as well meet the overall success of the business. It is therefore essential that the tourism industry in Tokyo, Japan, set up realistic goals and objectives and this will help them in realizing their dreams for they would track the progress of the sector (Swans & Edgell 2013). It gives the business something that they can work towards achieving. The set objectives they sometimes act as a motivation to the members of the organization for they all understand what is required of them at the end of the day. Some of the objectives that have been set by the travel and tourism industry of Japan are:-

To increase the number of tourists (international) visiting the country to 18 million

To also be able to boost domestic tourism and ravel consumption.

The above mentioned were the set objectives by the year 2016 for Japan, and this country has always worked towards achieving the already set goals or rather the objectives.

Environment

The environment is an important factor, and it as well affects the performance of a business. It can be defined as anything that surrounds an organization or in this case the tourism industry and has a significant influence on it. The environment should then be well analyzed to identify how it is affecting the business, and an adverse effect is detected, it’s then controlled before it goes too far. Under this element of the market plan, some segments make up the environment and are very crucial in the industry (Assaf, 2012). These are – Competitors, technology, demographics. Some major classifications are the political, social and physical environments.

For the tourism industry to grow well under minimal challenges, it should then study and understand how the political trends, as well as the government legislation and rules, affect the industry. Are there some legalities and formalities needed in the business? If any, have you fully adhered to them to ensure the proper running of the industry?

Tokyo should understand the effect of the government in the travel and tourism industry in Japan, and if it has adhered to them and if not, what then they can do for better performance. Competitors are always there in every good business, and they still help put the company on toes. Japan as a country, has very competitors in this industry since many countries have the same industry and still yearning to be the best.

It is thus vital that this country analyzes different countries which have the industry and are doing relatively well and be sure to note what is that they do which Japan as a country does not do and has had a competitive advantage over it. Personal analysis is also important, and therefore, Japan should be able to tell its weaknesses that the competitors take advantage of and try to improve on the same. Look at your strengths and as well try to modify them and use them as an advantage over your competitors (Henderson, 2016). Are they offering better prices as compared to your industry? Tourism and travel include accommodation in most cases and therefore, find out how favorable your rooms and facilities as a whole are.

Consumer needs, tastes, and preferences will always change as time goes by. Find out the available technology that can help you in the satisfaction of these tastes and preferences. Ensure that your industry id up to date with the new technology to be able to fight fairly with your competitors.

3) Market Strategy.

The elements under this segment can be controlled by the industry itself. It is therefore right to say that, it is a total combination of different factors which their effect can well be influenced as well as controlled by the industry itself. Some of these elements which are so significant in the industry and can be controlled are the product, price, place or the location as well as the promotion of the product itself.

To kick off the marketing strategy is the product which can be referred to as anything that is provided in the market to be able to satisfy the customer needs and wants (Uzama, 2009). It can be useful, or sometimes it can be serviced. In the case of tourism industry of Tokyo in Japan, what they offer to satisfy their customers is a service and in this case, is the one treated as a good. A right product should be of very high quality and be sold out at very affordable prices.

It is therefore important that the tourism industry ensures that their services are high quality and that every consumer which are tourists, in this case, would be interested in visiting their destinations. As an industry, find out what features the products of your competitors have and how this has helped to propel in the industry.

The set price is also a major factor to consider. As an industry, do not offer rates that are way too high as compared to your competitors as consumers tend to go for that which is cheap (Berger, 2010).  It is also not good to set the prices way too low as most of these customers will deem your services of poor quality based on the set price.

Therefore, it is thus suitable to look at something well known as the price equilibrium and then be able to set your prices accordingly. As the industry sets its prices, let it have in mind the costs that were incurred in the production of the service. Do not then set the prices and place your industry in the situation of being affected by loses. Every sector and in this case the tourism industry in Tokyo, Japan, has a target customer or rather the potential customer (Leung & Baloglu, 2013). Find out how accessible these customers are able to access your destinations. It is therefore crucial that the country, Japan, ensures that the places set as the tourism destination areas are accessible and when a first timer tourist comes there wishes for more visits, unlike that customer who wants they had chosen a different and a better destination than that which you are offering.

Lastly in this segment but not least, is the promotion. How well do you want your industry to be known countrywide as well as worldwide? Then this can only be possible through advertisements, road shows and so on which are some of the elements of promotion. Promotion is essential as it helps in public awareness. People, both the target customers and others can know what you offer and as well be able to identify the prices.

Sometimes, as an industry, give the various destinations that you offer in the industry, and you can sometimes highlight what is expected in the goals you have quoted.

4) The Profile.

In this that the region, the country or the destination points out what they offer as a tourist attraction area or destination (Takamitsu, 2011). Explain vividly all the facilities that are available giving full descriptions where necessary. It is at this point that the travel and tourism industry is expected to list down all the tourism destinations they have and be sure to convince the customers that it would be of great essence to them as it is in line with their needs and wants.

5) Budget.

For any business or industry to do well both economically or financially, physically and socially (well-being of others especially the tourists), it is then necessary that a budget is set or instead proposed. A budget can be said to be the expected total income as well as expenditure throughout a given time. The one and most important essential things n budgeting is to ensure that, the set budget is very realistic and can be achieved. It makes no sense when an industry comes up with large amounts in budgeting that seem unrealistic to meet at the end of the set period. Japan has also not been left out in this as the government has always allocated some right amount for this sector in its financial budgets (Nozawa, 1992). In the current fiscal year which the government agreed to start as from 1st April 2019, the budget for tourism in Japan was drafted as 71 billion.

6) Implementation.

In this stage, everything said in the market plan, the strategies and everything encompassed in the marketing work is put in place. In the implementation stage, the goals, aims, and objectives that have been set are put into consideration. The budget should also be considered as it is an important tool in this stage of implementation. When an industry messes at this stage and puts in practice some market strategies different from the planned ones, or maybe does not consider the budget put in place, then it is seen to be in a verge of collapsing and sometimes it indeed collapses. Therefore, when the tourism industry is at this stage, then it should be sure to include and consider all the above-discussed segments and the elements under them.

7) Evaluation.

It is at this stage that everything that was implemented in the previous step is checked and verified. It is done so to check whether it was done according to the expectations. For the evaluation to be practical, then the set goals and objectives are considered, and then the industry should then check it was quite useful (Uzama, 2009). For the case of Japan where one of their objectives is to increase the number of tourists, then it can be checked at the end of the process whether this was achieved.

Assuming it was not achieved, then the deviations that might have occurred should be checked and controlled. Evaluation is mainly done to take measures and initiatives the worse gets to the worst. It helps the business avoid losses that may be accompanied but these deviations.

Conclusion.

Japan is ranked among the best countries in East Asia when it comes to the issue of travel and tourism. For Japan to hold this position and as well keep on growing, then it is necessary for it to keep on reviewing and analyzing its marketing work and ensure that it is about the overall objectives of the industry. This is one of the major and most effective ways of tracing the success of a business, an enterprise or an organization. When production and a country as a whole does what is expected of them, then within no time Japan will be in a position that many travel and tourism industries in many countries always wish for. The key secret to all of these is to have a good, well organized and well-researched marketing work.

Juul Smoking Problem

Vaping is a common thing that goes on in America, vapes appeared in stores a few years back and starting in 2018 a major e-cigarette by the name of “juul”, has been the most major e-cigarette especially among teenagers in high school and middle school. Smoking one pod out of the juul equals to a whole pack of cigarettes. The notion that e-cigarettes are not harmful is what has accelerated the issue of smoking. Many teenagers more than ever are now hooked on nicotine more than before including individuals who at first were not really smokers (Andrews). Researchers have attributed the increase in number of students using vapes to the cool buzz that is associated with it. Jull a leading manufacturer when it comes to e-cigarettes have constantly been accused of misleading people that e-cigarettes are “safe alternative smoking.” This paper looks at the dangers that e-cigarettes have posed including an increase in lung related injuries.

Since the introduction of e-cigarettes many people had been sold to the idea that vaping would actually be a safe choice instead of smoking packs of cigarettes. People begun purchasing this produce especially the Juul Lab USB-size vaporizer. In 2016, FDA decided that they would regulate e-cigarettes as part of tobacco product. This was already a red flag considering that most juul products were being said that they do not have tobacco. CDC has pointed out the concern that they have for the e-cigarettes pointing out that there have been 2290 cases of lung related damage from people who were using vapes. With the increase in number of deaths as well as lung related injuries, CDC were quick to point out that the vapes were not safe and people needed to stay away from them until the vapes are certified as safe to use. There are symptoms that have been associated with the use of vapes leading to decline in health including chest pains, coughing, and difficulty in breathing. Out of the 380 plus cases that have been reported, six have resulted in death .

There are several reasons to why many people have embraced vapes and why number of people using e-cigarettes keep on rising daily. Some individuals have turned into vaping as a means to quit traditional cigarettes. Traditional cigarettes have been demonized that they have too much negative impacts including lung damage while vaping has been said to have very little effect to a person’s health. There are arguments that nicotine is quite addictive and habituating effects. Nicotine can be calming especially under stress as well as helping with concentration and thus most who were cigarettes addicts finds these as a much safer option. Another reason is because of social image. Many vape smokers do it because their friends are doing so and it appears to be cool (Manolis, 67-70).

It’s important to understand why vaping has caused a craze with all adults coming up with suggestions on the best way that the issue can be dealt with. Nicotine is a primary content that is found in the vapes and has been shown to cause an increase in certain diseases such as stroke, diabetes, lung cancer and heart disease. The vape liquids also contain additives including glycerol and propylene glycol (Carlos, pg. 13-14). These toxic chemicals have been linked to cancer and other respiratory diseases. Researchers have also raised concerns on a chemical used in flavoring of the vape juice s it may cause a condition referred to as popcorn lung. This is the scarring as well as the obstruction of lungs’ airways. CDC reported that vitamin E acetate that is also added to the vapes may contributing to the lung related issues. A test was conducted on the lung fluid from the outlets thought to have lung related issues from the vape and vitamin E acetate was present. The Department of Health have requested processing companies not to sell products that contain vitamin E acetate till a conclusive agreement is reached.

Juul Labs have disputed these statistics and stood their ground that their product is safe to use as their advertisement still continue on how vaping is a better option even for people who would like to quit smoking at some point. Although Juul makes billions of dollars, young kids in high school and college don’t pay any mind to the health risks that come with smoking the juul or any e-cigarette, kids smoke these e-cigarettes just to fit in or be cool with the crowd that they are in and it is sad that this is the type of society we live in, especially with our younger generation (Pascus). Lawsuits are happening to this very day, stating the Juul company preyed on the younger generation, with ad’s and by putting in younger teens heads that smoking Juul’s gave them a “sense of belonging” in the society. Juul started to close everything down in the past year, by suspending flavored pod’s, and cutting down the use of ads on their social media accounts, but critics state that them doing that was a little too late, the use of juul with high school kids jumped from 11.7% in 2017 to 20.8% in 2018. Among those of have sued Juul Lab for the misleading advertisement includes the New York attorney general Letitia James claiming the company was using deceptive methods in their advertisement and more so targeting teenagers who are more vulnerable.

One reason why people bought the idea of using vapes and stopping the use of smoking as the belief that traditional cigarettes had more nicotine than the e-cigarettes, however, Juul’s electronic cigarette exposes users to nicotine at a much higher rate than traditional cigarettes. In April 2018, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb announced that he was creating a Youth Tobacco Prevention Plan aimed at stopping the dramatic rise in the use of e-cigarette and tobacco products among youth. In a bid to help rescue the youths several measures have been put in place. You must be at least 21 to purchase a juul or juul pod, a juul black market is the source for many teens, through eBay or Craigslist. The FDA contacted eBay to raise concerns about listings of juul products on its website, resulting in the removal of the listings and the creation of measures to prevent new listings from being posted. FDA need to be stricter and ensure that all e-cigarettes are banned until safety measures are taken by the manufacturers. Many know that the youths tend to prefer flavored pods and are among the highest sold. If FDA do not put an end to all these an increase in number of users using Juul products will continue to increase and so will the lung related issues increase leading to even more death (Cai).

In conclusion, vaping manufacturers have been able to appeal to more young consumers to use vapes because they term it a safer option. These advertisement makes it cool but they do not indicate that these too can be addictive as they contain nicotine and also THC a very addictive product. As a cooperate company continues to make millions, there are innocent youths whose health have deteriorated for engaging in something that was termed a safe and better option. FDA needs to be stricter on the regulations that are in place and ban or even penalize companies that use deceptive advertisements to attract the youth into using vapes.
