Background

For this project, you are going to create an employee portal website for the IT department. The portal should help strengthen communication and the relationship between the I.T. department and the rest of the organization, and provide relevant information to employees (big hint there). An employee portal page is employee-facing; it is not for the public. You may use www.wix.com or www.weebly.com or WordPress for the website generators. They are free.

Project Specifications (“Scope” of the Project)

You are to create a website (a ‘mock’ portal) using one of the free website generators.You need 6 pages:

– home page that is appropriate for an IT department

– page on data breach (from assignment 2)

– page on social engineering (ditto)

– page on physical & network security (ditto)

– page on Internet of Things (ditto)

– one additional page on IT topic of your choosing

Design

The first page should be your “home” page and should include IT-relevant department information. Research this!

• The home page needs toinclude a summary paragraph on the just-completed seminar from assignment one, and provide links to 5 subsequent pages. (Page 1)

• Four of the pages each summarize the sessions in the seminar from assignment one. These 4 pages will each contain the verbiage you wrote up for assignment two. You may cut and paste your assignment 2 work right on each of these 4 pages as the content. But consider the addition of tasteful design elements on each page (hint) and appropriate web components and navigation features. (Pages 2-5)

• You are also to create one more page (topic of your choosing, as long as it is relevant to IT and you have written the content – don’t simply link to outside sources). (Page 6)

• Repeat: your home/landing page should include IT-relevant department information but all the links or features you put on the page do not have to be functional; only the 6 pages I’ve mentioned above. It is OK to have an image of a web feature (say, a link to a map for your organization) that does not work – as long as the above six pages are met, and you have other relevant IT department information/features on the home page. Repeat, not all IT relevant info on the home page must be functional. I am looking at the look-and-feel: do you know what belongs on an IT intranet portal? – that’s what I’m looking for.

Working in Pairs – Optional

You may choose to work in pairs on this assignment (2 people per assignment) or you may complete it individually.

• If you work in pairs, you will need to share a log-on/pw into the website generator so that you can both access it. If you choose to work in pairs, you need to divide up the pages and

o a) Be sure to put BOTH names on the bottom of your home, or landing, page, and

o b) Put your individual name at the bottom of the page(s) you create.

o c) Both of you should submit the assignment with the URL in the comment box.

• You should plan on using 2 of your assignment two write-ups apiece, and collaborate on the home page and sixth page (topic or your choosing) or divide up the latter two and each do one. Note: consistency of the site’s look and feel is important (hint).

• There will be a Discussion Board Section set up to “Find a Partner for the Project” if you choose to work with someone. Work through the discussion board or email and make sure you and your partner discuss whether you will be working virtually (and when) or F2F in a coffee shop or on campus, etc.

Submitting Your Assignment

You will provide your website URL in Moodle by the due date of Monday March 13th by 11:55 pm. There will be a textbox in this assignment area. Simply publish your website and then cut and paste the URL of your website into the textbox. You don’t need to upload anything – except a references document – I will grade the website right from the URL you provide. Repeat: make sure you published it in Wix, Weebly or WordPress so that I can grade it but you do NOT have to pay to publish it. Don’t pay for any features! Email me if the site tries to get you to pay.

The FAQs

• Do not copy any verbiage from other websites. It will earn you a zero on the assignment. You may link to ‘extra’ pages as long as it is extra and not part of the required pages, above (For example, you may wish to link to the PMI as part of a page – but your own content must be on the webpage primarily.)

• You do NOT need to put the sources from assignment 2 on the website; only any NEW content or Images you wish to cite.

• You MAY use the template photos on the website generator, or upload your own, or take from the Internet. As an academic assignment where you are not trying to make money off the photos, this is fine. Put the image URL on the reference page if you wish.

• You must ‘publish’ your site and provide me with the URL. Do not PAY to publish it, or pay for any features. This assignment should not cost you anything.Email me if you run into any charges/fees on the sites.

• Yes, I will be glad to preview the site, if you give me at least a day’s notice! You will have to publish it first; but it’s ok, you can go back in and make changes and re-publish if necessary.

You will be graded therefore primarily on good web design, appropriate design for an I.T portal (research some!), the overall aesthetics, and most of all: good navigability and appropriate good web design concepts..

Since you will be researching, and you should always cite the source of your research, you may either upload a Word document with your outside sources, or include a last linked page (so, a 7th page) to a “References” page (which realistically wouldn’t be on a portal, but is ok for this assignment. You don’t need to follow APA for this assignment; just provide me with the sources). You do NOT need to re-cite sources from assignment 2; only new sources you may use for assignment 3.

Value of portal website: 50 points.

• Inclusion of all required components:. 10 points

• Consistent, appropriate aesthetics and navigability of site, per website ‘best practices’: 10 points

• Appropriate home page (or ‘landing page’) for the IT portal and related content: 10 points

• Additional page: its relevance to an IT portal 10 points

• Adequate and appropriate display of the summaries of the four sessions 5 points

• Overall professional look and feel of the submitted project (spelling, typos, and quality of the website): 5 points

• Any copied/plagiarized verbiage results in a zero on the assignment
