Introduction

It is often said that learning never ends, and neither does the acquisition of knowledge. However, for graduate students, the completion of the program more or less halts a stage of theoretical learning and ushers in a learning stage rooted in practice, also known as working. While scouring the internet for graduate jobs, I was captivated by an Administrative Assistant role at Pearl Coast Glass & Windows Australia posted on Seek dot com Australia. The company prides itself on being the premier supplier of glass and glazing in Broome. The company mainly services the Kimberly and North West region. I see this position as a perfect opportunity to put into practice everything that I have learned in my Degree. This report entails my motivational interests for the role, my cover letter and my resume.

Motivational Interests

I chose to apply for the administrative assistant position at Pearl Coast Glass & Windows Australia because the position comes with competitive remuneration. The official job advertisement notes that the role comes with a pay package between $55,000 – $69,999 annually. For a graduate student, the remuneration is not too shabby, and neither is it too good to be true, seeing as the average Australian earns $60,000 a year. For most employees, compensation is the biggest motivator because of the ever-increasing costs of living. The role at Pearl Coast Glass & Windows also offers room for personal development, which is essential for a graduate student. Pearl Coast Glass & Windows is a lowkey company with stellar reviews; this means that I have the chance to gradually develop my administrative assistant skills in a conducive working environment.

I also chose to apply for the administrative assistant role at Pearl Coast Glass & Windows Australia because I meet the qualifications for the role. Admittedly, the role does not specify academic qualifications and but requests three years of experience. In other words, it is an open role, and the most qualified individual may be granted the role. I fancy my chances here because I offer a blend of youth and experience to the already excellent personnel at Pearl Coast Glass & Windows Australia. In any administrative assistant role, the basics are documentation, planning and scheduling and bookkeeping. I am well-versed in all these areas. Moreover, I possess skills that can transform the administrative roles at Pearl Coast Glass & Windows Australia from a labour-intensive outlook to a capital-intensive outlook with the introduction of technological tools.

Likewise, I chose the role because I would like to leave my mark on Pearl Coast Glass & Windows Australia. In most cases, graduate students make the mistake of applying for unrealistic roles in well-to-do organizations. However, most of these organizations already have predetermined practices and procedures in place and are more likely to hire an expert and experienced applicant than a fresh graduate. At Pearl Coast Glass & Windows, I have the chance to hone my administrative skills while using my practical knowledge and skills to develop the organization. Notably, the company has a sales department that alludes to the existence of bidding for contracts and selling custom products and services. As a fresh graduate, I am well-versed with the dimensions of contemporary digital marketing and can give Pearl Coast Glass & Windows Australia a competitive edge when selected for the role.

I chose the role because it affords me the ability to work remotely in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The core roles and responsibilities of an administrative assistant are bookkeeping, documentation and planning and scheduling. All these responsibilities can be performed remotely in adherence to social distancing stipulations and lockdown orders. One thing I have learned as Covid-19 erodes our social freedoms is that remote working is here to stay. It is therefore imperative that all envisioned and desired roles have the provision of operating remotely. Even after the discovery of vaccines, Covid-19 rages on, and it looks like it will take a while for normalcy to resume. Therefore, the role at Pearl Coast Glass & Windows bodes well for the prevalent work conditions and allows me to operate remotely with the same productivity and efficiency.

I chose the role because it allows me to continue garnering practical skills and knowledge. One of the basics of being an administrative assistant is the capability to carry out research, document the findings and present them as the case may require. In this case, the products and services at Pearl Coast Glass & Windows inspire me to partake in more research to not only learn the dimensions of the job but also immerse myself in a culture of adhocracy at the company. In the job description, it is reiterated that applicants need to have problem-solving skills, which alludes to the existence of a culture of creativity and innovation at Pearl Coast Glass & Windows. Such a culture offers me the chance to learn something new every day.

Finally, I chose the role because of how well it fits my professional training. I recently completed my university education and I have a plan to grow my career through partnering with the best organizations. The role at Pearl Coast Glass & Windows promises to be a great one for both personal and professional development. I believe the organization is aligned to my individual and professional path, in terms of what it has to offer, and what I can gain from it. I intend to be of great value to the organization as it shapes my career and I help build it to the best of my capabilities.

Name seven factors that influence the ways police handle juvenile suspects

Name seven factors that influence the ways police handle juvenile suspects

Name seven factors that influence the ways police handle juvenile suspects?

When a juvenile delinquent is suspected of committing a crime there is usually a difference in the way he is treated. A juvenile delinquent is treated different from an adult; this is because they are expected to be under the care of their parents.

1.      The seriousness of the offense- most of the juvenile are arrested for minor offenses like shoplifting. However when accused of major offenses they are to be treated as a criminal. 2.      The police organization – some police department are organized into teams that deal with certain crimes like drug organizations. These teams investigate and arrest teenagers like adults.3.      The community – some communities are less tolerant to any form of crimes regardless of the age of the person. 4.      The wishes of the complainant – some complainants are usually not willing to press charges when the crimes are committed by minors.5.      The demeanour of the youth – some youths are less apologetic to crimes and rarely are they allowed to go out into the society. . However the reverse attitude can lead to less punishment. 6.      The gender of the offender – young women are viewed as less aggressive and more of victims of circumstances and commit crimes as a reaction. 7.      The race and social class of the offender – teenagers from low income social class are bound to be convicted more than teenagers from high income classes.

Is the basis for arresting a juvenile the same for arresting an adult? Explain. What are the differences, if any?

The basis of arresting a juvenile and an adult are the same because the state of a crime does not change, however the difference is in the actions done afterwards. When an adult is arrested as a suspect for being involved in a crime, he can be held for forty eight hours but a juvenile can be released. The immediate guardian is contacted and is allowed to bail out the juvenile and when that is not possible the teenager is taken to a juvenile cell. Adults are taken to a holding cell and they are only allowed to talk to their attorney.

The differences in the way juveniles are treated is because for the adult, law is supposed to punish while for the juvenile it is supposed to rehabilitate to create a responsible citizen of the country.

LIGHT BULB WORKSHEET

LIGHT BULB WORKSHEET

LIGHT BULB WORKSHEET

Conserving the amount of energy we use is often suggested as an important way people can combat things like acid rain and global warming. It is also an excellent way to combat the high cost of living. The use of Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs is often touted as one way to cut energy use. These bulbs are not the strip lights you have seen in school building and stores. LED bulbs are the size of a normal light bulb but have a type of covering over the bottom part of the bulb (see images below).

To find out the impact the choice of bulb has on the amount of electricity we use save this worksheet to your computer as a Word Document. The complete the following activity noting that you will post some of the data to the Question and Answer forum on the class web site by Friday of this week.:

Visit Wal-Mart, Lowes, or ACE and find both of the following:

A box of normal (incandescent) soft white light bulbs. These must be 60W, medium base, soft white bulbs. They may be general purpose or 2X (long life) bulbs. Make sure that they are general lighting bulbs and not 3 way, fan, or any other color bulbs.

A box of LED bulbs that are the equivalent of 60W. Make sure that they are general lighting bulbs and not 3 way, fan, or dimmable bulbs.

The LED bulbs will look like this: The normal light bulbs look like this:

! !

You must find a LED that produces the equivalent light of a 60 watt normal incandescent bulb.

Note that the life of some bulbs is given as “year life”. For example 1.4 year life.

Each “year life” is equivalent to 3 hours per day for 365 days. 3 x 365 = 1095 hours. So, to convert “year life” into hours you will need to do the following: year life x 1095 = life of the bulb in hours.

Once you have found your 2 boxes of bulbs you do not need to buy them.

Take 2 photos with each item; One showing you with the item, and one close enough so that it shows the price and the information shown on its box. Attach (paste/insert them into the Word document) the photos to the end of this worksheet.

CHARACTERS SCENES

*Antigone She is described in the play as the daughter of Oedipus. Antigone is also the sister of Oedipus as described in the play. This is considering the fact that Oedipus married his own mother. After the death of Oedipus and his brothers, Antigone and her sister are the left as the only represenatatives of the Labdascus family. According to the play, Antigone is depicted as a heroine due to the fact that she goesto tha states to claim that one of his brother by name Polyneices ought to be buried with due respect, the same way as his other brother by the name Eteocles is buried. The public in the play claims that Antigone is too self-righteous, even alienating while others claim that she is a feminist.

*Creon Creon is the one who helps in raising-up Antigone and her sister. He makes an opinion that Eteocles, who is one of the two brothers of Antigone to be honored with buried. The reason that she gave was that Eteocles was a major defender of Thebes. Creon proceeds in pointing out that the body of Polyneices ought to left without being buried and be food of the vultures. The play-writer describes Creon as the ruler of Thebes in the wake of war. She cherishes orders and loyalty above everything else in her life. He is depicted as selfiosh and does not recognize that other forms of law exist apart from the Thebes law. The play writer describes him as a proud person and he always condemns Antigone while he defies the gods and brings destruction unto himself. He is broken by the information about the death of his wife and is forced to confront the suicide of his wife.

*Polyneices and *Eteocles Both of them are brothers of Antigone. According to the play, they appear as casualties in a brutal war for power. They both die at each other’s hand.

*Ismene She is a sister to Antigone and described as the strong foil of the sister’s life. According to the play, Ismene is depicted as a weak woman and terrible of disobeying men especially in power. She does not belief that women ought to disobey the laws that are set by men even though they are against the human rights. When her brother Polyneices dies, she fails to offer assistance in burring him.

Chorus of Theban Elders The Chorus as described in the play comments on the interactions with Creon. The elders actively intercede with the advice of Creon at a critical moment displayed at then end of the play.

Sentry/Watchman He brings the news that Polyneices has been buried and he later captures Antigone. He has a powerful and interesting speech that captures the attention of the audience in the play. His speech signifies how the Greece people use rhythms and diction in their natural speech. He has self motivated attitude and is depicted in the play as a person who tries to protect his life in all means possible. He asks basic questions that contradict with the statements given by other characters.

*Haemon He is the son of Creon and Eurydice. According to the play-writer, he is engaged to be married to Antigone. He appears to defend Antigone from his father on the issue of burying Polyneices.

Eurydice She is the mother of Haemon and the wife of Creon. She plays a major role in bringing up Antigone after the death of her brothers. She commits suicide after learning the death of her son who also succumbs to death after killing himself.

*Teiresias He is a blind prophet who warns Creon that his regards concerning treating the body of Polyneices is not in accordance with the laws of the gods.

A messenger He is described as a servant who is courageous and activbe in his work. He reports the suicides of both Antigone and Haemon to the Chorus and Eurydice. The messenger leaves to follow Eurydice when she runs off in grief.

Second Messenger This is the second messenger who reports the death of Eurydice’s to the Chorus and Creon.

III.AFTER you have read the play, type your answers to the following requirements.

State what you think is the playwright’s thesis or theme(s) and support with action and /or characters.

The themes of the play include; state power is seen clearly since Antigone goes against the state and advocates burying her brother even though the state is against the norm. Antigone argues that burial rituals are personal issues and the state is not required to interfere. Despite the threats that anyone who performs the burial rituals will face a death penalty Antigone vows to go against the law and bury her brother in the best way she knows. Antigone refuses to allow Creon control what she can do with her siblings, for instance, she is seen telling Ismene about Creon proclamation, “he has no right to keep me from my own”. In the ancient times dispute between the state and individual was constant at times not agreeing with state laws resulted to murder and torturous behavior of the state to ensure other rebellious people to conform to laws. In this scenario Antigone actions eventually resulted to the king regretting his actions and promised to be a better king (Donaldson, 2010).

Civil defiance

This is seen in the conflict between Creon and Antigone , Antigone claims that she would rather respect God’s laws rather than state laws. Creon commands respect to set regulations he says that “there is nothing worse than disobedience to authority” but Antigone answers by saying that state regulations are not fixed hence it can be broken in civil defiance in intense cases in contrast the god’s laws cannot be broken in whatever circumstances (Donaldson, 2010).

Citizenship

The notion of citizenship emerge in the dispute between Creon and Antigone, in Creon opinion citizenship refers to supreme submission to the laws of the state hence Creon finds nothing wrong in accusing Antigone to death when he discovered that Antigone has forsaken her citizenship by defying him. Antigone on the other hand defines citizenship freedom to perform one’s wishes within the position of citizenship. In addition, citizenship defiance is also seen when Creon does not want to bury polyneices accordingly this also shows what it means to be a citizen. What Creon is doing means being a citizen means one is owned by the state and the government can do whatever it pleases with a person dead or alive (Donaldson, 2010). Greeks took burial rituals as a sign of identification of citizenship and attachment. In the story, it is thus normal for the people of thebes to not bury the Argives, but it is extremely shocking Creon’s actions of refusal to bury polyneices. Polyneices was a citizen of Thebes therefore it was normal for Thebans to perform burial rituals on him. In his explanation Creon claims that polyneices detached himself from them hence they are justified to treat him like a non-citizen hence burial rituals on him can be overlooked (Donaldson, 2010).

The act of Creon refusing to bury Polyneices as a normal citizen shows that Creon takes Polynieces like attackers that is Argives who when dead are not given burial rituals. Creon claims that Polyneices showed aggressive actions against the city thus invalidating his citizenship making him a foreigner. In Creon’s opinion citizenship is majorly based on devotion, it is annulled when a citizen acts against the set laws. In contrast, Antigone gives a different meaning of citizenship, Antigone agrees that Polynieces had deceived the state but the disloyalty does not permit the state to deny him the rights of a proper burial (Donaldson, 2010). Creon has convictions that citizenship is an agreement and thus if the agreement is broken, the parties have the rights of calling off the agreement. The contrasting views of citizenship, that citizenship is unconditional and unquestionable and otherwise that citizenship is based on specific manners are thus recognized as citizenship by character and citizenship by regulations.

Fidelity

Antigone’s willpower to perform burial rituals for Polynices originates from a need of devotion to her family, besides the gods. She continuously claim that she must do something to satisfy “those that are dead” since they have much importance than any other leader. In the scene that opens the story, Antigone makes a an touching petition to her sister Ismene claiming that they ought to defend their brother out of sibling’s love , even though he had betrayed their state. Antigone makes few notices of the gods, therefore it can be interpreted that are decisions for worshiping higher laws are laws of devotion to family not spiritual laws (Donaldson, 2010).

Although Creon denies Antigone to honor her family, he is seen to honor his family too. This is the only place whereby Antigone and Creon are seen to be on the sane side of reasoning. When Creon was addressing his son Haemon, Creon recommends that Haemon should respect the state as a citizen in addition to respecting him as his father. He goes further to note that “everything else shall be second to your father’s decision”. The posture seem tremendous, particularly in the radiance fact Creon advocates respect to the state above all else. It is not certain though how he would tackle the two values in dispute, it is certain that even for Creon, family has importance other than the state.

The place of women

Antigone’s action reflects clearly the impact of her actions. Creon also agrees that it will be hard to defeat Antigone in the dispute because she was a woman. Greek’s women were extremely denied the freedom women deserve. Antigone’s disobedient behavior is threatening to the state and it distresses gender roles imposed on greek citizens. Ismene on the other hand still believes that the men have a upper hand in every matter. She does not want a curse to be upon her caused by any disobedience behavior. She believes that men have great strength and thus should be respected. When Creon saw signs of defeat he did not want to give in since it will be against the state laws for a woman to win in a disput (Donaldson, 2010).

Pride

Antigone is seen to show pride and refuses to be defeated even when it is clear that her brother had betrayed the state and needed to punished, and that he was deemed to be buried as a foreigner rather than a citizen. The state in this story is governed by pride since the men are given an upper hand of making laws that contradict with spiritual laws. When Creon discovered that he had made a mistake of denying Antigone to do according to her wishes he still refuses to accept defeat (Donaldson, 2010). He experiences suffering of the loss of his entire family since he refuses to agree with them when they wanted him to agree with Antigone.

C.

1. Choral song in the play

The lyrical sung by Theban elders whose their main goal is to persuade Creon to burry Polynices and forget about the past. This lyrical song acts as a recollection of the past and advices the king.

2. Athenian tragedy

This during the play becomes less ceremonial where it explains the essence of gods in the society and especially to individuals in a group, which motivates the concerned individual to undertake great responsibilities.

3. Myths

These were half-truths held by the play’s society, which involved believing in gods as well as supernatural power and intervention. These myths about gods were believed to control and dominate nature even people’s actions.

Apple is one of the leading technological and innovation firms across the world. The revenue margin and profit at Apple amounts to billions of dollars annually that shows the huge capacity at the company. Apple has been a key and vibrant firm that has adopted a cutting-edge technology both in production and management. The firm has attained a very lucrative market that amounts to billions of dollars from its global customers. Apple’s FY2016 revenues fell by 8% that was attributed to huge spending in marketing and research. This year saw 1.7 billion dollars being diverted to marketing for foreign regions that increased Apple’s external expenditure. Additionally, 1.1 billion dollars was directed to reach and innovation thus putting the company’s revenues at strain as noted in the end year financial report speech. In his remarks, the CEO acknowledged that Apple’s decline in revenues for the year 2016 was due to its massive spending in research and innovation. The report also indicated that Apple was already undergoing rapid expansion in its operation sites that led to spending and diversion of money that would have been directed to marketing and customer satisfaction.

The various reports on financial spending pointed to this matter that has remained as one of Apple’s major disasters in its growth portfolio. More so is the inclusive and diverse use of technology that is applied in the managerial operations enabling Apple to beat its rivals in market search (Khan etal., 2015). The supply chain of Apple has steadily grown and strengthened thus making the firm increase its foothold on the international market. Apple’s problems in the 90s were twofold: Its operating system was outdated and its products were expensive and uninspiring. In line with this, Apple has been able to dominate the key areas where it mainly targets the diverse tch field like in computing and communication. The digital research that has been dedicated to finding the right and fast gadgets and computing has proven to be a reliable field that is growing fast across the world. Apple turned around when Steve Jobs changed the company’s message and took some chances with the design (cha, 2017). The management at Apple has increasingly made its commitment to adding value to its production and marketing as one of the prime avenues to beating competition from close rivals.

Through its years of innovation and research, the management at Apple has mastered the art of impressing and pleasing the customers. In line with this, Apple has been able to dominate the key areas where it mainly targets the diverse tch field like in computing and communication (Khan etal., 2015). The digital research that has been dedicated to finding the right and fast gadgets and computing has proven to be a reliable field that is growing fast across the world. For the past few years Apple has managed to win customer loyalty and thus increase its leverage over its rivals in the market. One of the key growth points that is well utilized by Apple is quality and customer satisfaction. Guided by its mission, Apple has strived to win the right customer loyalty that has earned it more markets across the world (cha, 2017). To add on this, Apple has capitalized on the growing middle class that has been a key source of market with many people to afford the smartphones and other gadgets sold at Apple.

The financial and revenue management has been a key pillar to Apple’s strength and growth that have enabled the company stand strong in the technology field. The company has invested billions of dollars in the research and innovation that shows the capital strength at Apple (cha, 2017). In addition, the management has over the years generated enough revenue that has added to Apple’s strengths. The key to Apple’s performance and growth and stability has mainly been due to its viable sources of revenue through the huge profits gained over the years. In addition, the company has thrived over the growing U.S. and global market that keeps on growing. These factors have helped Apple make significant gains in the market and also broaden its reach to the global customers. The billions spent in research and innovation have also enabled Apple increase its competitive advantage over its rivals. More to this is the diversity in the management approach where the staff at Apple have a high-performance value that accounts to the efficiency and quality at Apple. In addition, the company has attained the right leverage on the perceived value for market dominance that ensures steady outlet for its products (Khan etal., 2015). The creative and ingenious ways to beat competition in the market like quality has been applied at Apple through its years of operation.

These factors have shown that the company is increasingly becoming aware of the trends in the field of technology thus staying ahead of its rivals. Apple as a dominant player in the tech world has earned a good reputation and increased its market share over the years (cha, 2017). Both Apple’s Products and Services businesses grew in FY 2020. Revenue for the Products business rose 3.2% to comprise about 80% of Apple’s total revenue. Among its products, iPhones comprised 50% of total revenue; Macs at 10%; iPads at 9%; and Wearables, Home and Accessories at 11%. These factors have jointly played a key role in shaping how Apple operates, interact with its customers, as well stretching its wings to the global demand. The various aspects of Apple’s performance mostly touch on the value and intensity of its strategies such as marketing and innovation research. As seen in its annual financial and strategic report, Apple has maintained a close relation with its past that has been the basic or foundation for its continued innovation and cutting-edge services.

Over the years, Apple has proven to be unbeatable in inventing modern communication and computing technology that has both ushered in a new era in digital world as well as information sharing. To add on this, Apple continues to derive a good image and quality that have been the magnet to the market thus fetching millions of customers annually. Apple’s annual turron over that has been at least 25.5% has shown that the company attains a high return on its investments that mainly goes to research and marketing. These positive figures are a major boost to Apple in its bid to take over the global communication and computing market. Apple’s investment portfolio has also shown a 5.5% annual increase in its first ten years of operation that made it go deep in research and marketing. In line with this, Apple has been able to dominate the key areas where it mainly targets the diverse tch field like in computing and communication (Khan etal., 2015). The digital research that has been dedicated to finding the right and fast gadgets and computing has proven to be a reliable field that is growing fast across the world.

The launch of the iPad was one of the greatest news made by Apple in the market where it was able to fetch good prices and revenues from the gadget. The announcement came when Apple was already facing some lawsuits over customer satisfaction and even some losses in some markets. This triggered the management to adopt a single model in market approach that was mean to build the right value and strong revenue generating model. However, things failed to turn out as projected forcing the management to look at how and where it could derive a market boost as well as sales. Most importantly, Apple continues to spearhead its diverse operations that have largely been directed to creating both reliable and effective marketing models.

Introduction

The importance of nursing as a profession cannot be gainsaid as far as enhancing the quality of services provided in healthcare institutions is concerned. Underlining the fundamental roles that they play in the healthcare sector is the fact that they communicate with the clients, other healthcare professionals, support persons, as well as individuals in the community. Their work is spread out across being caregivers, teachers, communicators, client advocates, counselors, managers, leaders, and even case managers. Like every other profession, nursing has underlined the importance of incorporating technology in the conduction of the varied activities. It goes without saying that technology goes a long way in enhancing the quality and efficiency of services in the healthcare industry (Ball and Kathryn 41). Varied forms of technological advancements have been crafted in the recent times, with nanotechnology coming as one of the most promising one.

Nanotechnology and nanoscience refers to the study, as well as application of extremely small things that may be used in other science fields such as biology, engineering, material science, physics and chemistry. The Merriam Webster dictionary defines nanotechnology as a science that deals with the manipulation of materials on a molecular and atomic scale in an effort to build microscopic devices such as robots. Its application revolves around the capacity to see, as well as control these individual atoms and molecules so as to achieve a certain objective. Nanotechnology comes as a rapidly advancing area of science, with development being seen in an array of sectors (Allhoff and Patrick 43). The utility of the nanotechnology resides in the extremely small nature of the nanoparticles, which allows for enhanced interaction with other substances at the subatomic and atomic levels. These particles do not behave like liquids, gases or solids, and they come with distinctive electronic and mechanical properties (Ball and Kathryn 43). Nanotechnology has gained widespread application in the form of nanorobots (molecular robots) that can be implanted in the human body so as to monitor and alter physiological functions, drug delivery, disease alterations, enhancing cellular repair, as well as counteracting the process of aging, among other uses.

One of the most fundamental applications of nanotechnology is in the treatment of cancer. Currently, there are more than 20 nanotechnology drugs that are in clinical trials for varied types of cancers that range from blood cancers to solid tumors. Varied nanomaterials have gained immense use in medicine. These include nanoshells, which incorporate a core of silica, as well as a metallic outer layer, and have the capacity to be decorated using molecular probes for cancer-related compounds (Allhoff and Patrick 45). Nanoparticles are used in targeting tumor and other cells for treatment and imaging, while quantam dots are nanoparticles that are created from semiconductor materials that have the capacity to be connected to antibodies or other molecules that have the capacity to bind to a target (Murray 38). Fullerenes have the exceptional strength and distinctive thermal and electrical properties, while nanowires have diameters in the nanometer range, which have been valued for their electronic and structural properties. Other nanomaterials used in medicine may include dendrimers, liposomes and micelles.

Nanotechnology has been seen as extremely useful thanks to the complexity of cancer. It is worth noting that cancerous tumors are heterogeneous and are persistently changing with time. The technology has the capacity to enhance precision and control. Scholars have also noted that nanotechnology has the capacity to enhance the diagnosis monitoring of cancer through enabling high-throughput detection pertaining to complex molecular signatures, as well as enhancing the contrast of imaging (Allhoff and Patrick 47). Nanochips, for instance, may be used in separating proteins in the blood by charge and size, thereby fostering the identification of the molecular signature of cancers in an individual patient.

In addition, magnetic iron-based nanoparticles that have fluorescent tags may be used in imaging, where they would act as improved magnetic resonance contrast agents, thereby being used for MR-based assays (Ball and Kathryn 45). Currently, there are clinical trials on progress that use silica-gold nanoshells as real-time molecular probes in breast tissues that have the capacity to over-express HER2, the breast cancer biomarker.

In addition, nanotechnology has gained immense use in cancer treatment. Nanotechnology has the potential to enhance precision pertaining to targeting the appropriate or desired cells using an anti-cancer drug, thereby reducing the undesirable side effects through the reduction of systemic spread throughout the body (Allhoff and Patrick 56). Scholars and researchers have noted that nanomedicines used in the treatment of ovarian and breast cancer encase the conventional or typical cytotoxic drug such as liposome nanoparticles and paclitaxel in albumin, thereby hindering the release of their contents until such a time when they get to the target cells, thereby reducing the destruction that such medications have on the healthy cells (Allhoff and Patrick 76). One of the key benefits pertaining to the use of nanomedicine in cancer treatment is the fact that the maximum tolerated dose for the drugs would be far much higher in instances where it is encased in a targeted nanoparticle. Studies have outlined the fact that tumor necrosis factors (TNF) can be administered safely at high doses to melanoma patients in instances where it is incorporated in gold nanoparticles. Of particular note is the fact that tumor necrosis factor has had its use limited or restricted by the toxic reactions that it elicits.

Moreover, nanotechnology has been immensely used in the prevention of cancer. It has been noted that nanotechnology would be useful in the field of cancer prevention as far as the delivery of sufficient cancer-fighting compounds to patients in instances where those patients do not have the capacity to take in that compound in sufficiently high quantities through conventional or ordinary means. This is the case for Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), for instance, which is a compound that is found in green tea that incorporates cancer-fighting activities but is extremely poor oral absorption (Ball and Kathryn 47). In addition, researchers have come up with a nanoparticle that has the capacity to deliver EGCG in high doses, with studies being conducted on an animal model pertaining to prostate cancer. It is worth noting that the nanoparticle-enclosed EGCG, in the animal model, induced programmed cell death, decreased the volume of the tumor and hindered the formation of new blood vessels (Ball and Kathryn 47). Of course, there is immense work that remains to be done in an effort to enhance the development and design of nanomedicines. Of particular importance is the improvement of the knowledge pertaining to the things that make up precancerous lesions, as well as the manner in which they populations that are at risk can be detected. These populations would, undoubtedly become candidates for studies pertaining to prevention using nanomedicines that are developed in such a way that they can lower the risk of cancer.

While nanotechnology has gained immense use in the treatment of cancer, there have been a number of safety issues. It is worth noting that the long-term toxicities pertaining to nanoparticles that are used in medical practice currently remain unknown. However, nanostructures have the capacity to enter into cells of organs and reside there for an undetermined period of time prior to relocating to other organs or even being excreted. All this time, it would have unknown effects on the organs with which it comes into contact. This underlines the importance of collaboration between the varied regulatory agencies in the United States to ensure that the effects are not detrimental to the health of individuals, as well as ensure that the risks are not higher than the benefits derived from the technology as far as the health of individuals is concerned (Murray 48). Indeed, the general public incorporates natural fears pertaining to nanotechnology, especially considering the numerous unknowns. In essence, it is imperative that the public receives more and improved education pertaining to the nature of nanotechnology, including the meaning of naotoxicity in food or the environment, versus the meaning that it carries in medicine and nursing (Murray 49). In this regard, it is imperative that there is increased knowledge pertaining to biodistribution, excretion, metabolism, as well as the degradation of nanomaterials, which would go a long way ion demystifying the new field especially in the eyes of the public. On the same note, it is imperative that studies are conducted on the nanoparticles that are not excreted or metabolized so as to determine the long-term effects that they have on the human body. In instances where tracking some nanoparticles in vivo is difficult as is currently the case, it is imperative that new techniques of tracking them is identified.

Applying Economics to Current Issues

Part A Economic Systems and Government policy

Q# 1. Choose a recent example of a Government policy measure that has been introduced to influence the market’s outcome to the fundamental economic question: What to produce?

The law of demand and supply for a particular products has been inlay in almost all government activities, some of the main issues include the fact that the government relies on the market forces in determining what to produce and how much to produce. Fiscal policies and taxation are the main policy measures that the government uses to determine what to produce. The taxation policy is meant to reduce the level of reliance on gas and petrol. The government is concerned about the green house effect and has increased its taxation on oil and gas. The main problem that the government experienced while using this policy included the resistance from special interest parties and pressure from the OPEC.Q# 2. Choose a recent example of a Government policy measure that has been introduced to influence the market’s outcome to the fundamental economic question: How to produce?Explain the policy measure, and what it was intended to achieve. Comment on any problems that may arise.

The policy measures that the government uses to determine how to produce is the redistribution policy in which the government determines what how to produce with the public interest at heart. The US government uses the redistribution policy to determine which area is fit for producing a particular product. And which method is fit for this work. The government always relies on reviving industries to provide create employment tom its citizens. For example the federal government intervened when the three main out-manufacturers in the country needed bailout. General Motors, Ford and Chrysler have all been having financial problems and the employees were laid out to cut production cost. However, as time passed by, the government had to intervene by giving out load with some companies paying back .some paying and some plunging deep into debt. The federal government has however, failed to realize the amount as it is counting its bailout losses.

Part B Economic Analysis of Contemporary Events.

Oil and gas prices are the main news item that captured the headlines of newspapers and media in the last three years. This was caused by the escalating prices which have been on the increase for a number of reasons. However, the bottom line for news items was that the escalating prices of oil and gas was due to the environmental and economic factors which can only be related to the forces of demand and supply of oil and gas. It is also important to note that the prices of oil and gas have also defied most of the economic projections made by economic analysts.

Boardman, David & David, (1996) argue that some of the main projection about the 2012 is that the general demand for oil in the US will drop; this is based on the weakening economy. The EIA estimates that the volume of crude oil demanded will fall after the strong dollar value in the past two quarters; this is also assumed to affect the general rate of consumption of oil in the country. The modest economic growth projected by (Foster, 2000), the total demand for oil and gas in the US is likely to fall below a certain level upon which the country. These fall in demand s due to the increasing unemployment and the slow inflation that has been lurking over the past few months. With the rate of unemployment in the country, most households are cutting on their general expenses; this makes using family cars a luxury thereby reducing the demand for oil and gas.

The key influencers of the economic condition are likely to change in the final quarter of the year 2012 based on the data provided in the table 1. The demand for gas in the US is as shown in the table below:

Buyer Demand per Consumer

Price per liter Quantity (liters) demanded per week

$3.00 50

$2.75 60

$2.50 75

$2.25 95

$2.00 120

The schedule shows the correlation between the prices of gas in the country and the relative change in the quantity of gas demanded by an average family in the US. When the price of oil and gas in the US was low, the quantity of gas and oil demanded was very high; however, the sudden increase in the price of oil and gas in the country resulted into a decrease in the volume of oil and gas that the country uses. Government increased the price of oil and gas before that market forces came into play by increase the tax paid on oil and gas product, making oil and gas very expensive. The inverse relationship between the price of oil and demand for the same goods is the fundamental law behind oil and gas prices in the country (Foster, 2000).

The Law of Supply

The supply of good and service determines the price of the same good, for example, when the price of gas increased, the suppliers increased the volume the volume of oil and gas that they produced based on the various efficiency issues. However, these same metrics are also at play, when the government intervened. For example, when the suppliers were many, the price charged on oil and gas was very low, however, as the demand increased the prices of the oil and gas increased which then forced some household to stop using oil and gas products,.

Gas Supply per Consumer

Price per liter Quantity (liters) supplied per week

$1.20 50

$1.30 60

$1.50 75

$1.75 95

$2.15 120

The data shown in the table above have been used to develop, the supply curve shown bellow.

.

These two forces lead to the formation of an equilibrium price at which the prices of oil and gas is agreeable to both the suppliers and the customers. At this market equilibrium, the consumers are willing to pay for what the producers and the government charge to the gas and oil

These changes are likely to affect the general consumption of oil and gas, but the fact still remains that the producers and the customers are in charge of the market. The government intervention to reduce reliance on oil and gas is effective as the number of oil and gas consumers decreased remarkably. The market equilibrium price is $1.50, with a supply of 75 liters per consumer per week (Dahl, 2010).

Changes in Demand and Supply

According to Thurman, (2009), a number of changes in the volume and prices of the oil and gas demanded and supplied by the companies can occur, when this occur, the government will have to intervene. However, a number of forces are still at play, causing shifts in the curves as well as movements along the curves. The shift in the demand curves is caused by changes in the Consumer income, Consumer preference Price and availability of substitute goods as well as the population. These forces are

.

  Quantity (liters)per week

Price per liter Demand 1 Demand 2

$2.00 50 30

$1.75 60 40

$1.50 75 55

$1.25 95 75

$1.00 120 100

You can see this in the graph in figure 4, below. At each price point, the total demand is less, and the demand curve shifts.

On the other hand, when the demand shifted, the equilibrium prices also shifted.

Demand 2 Demand 1 Supply

Quantity (liters)per week Price per liter Quantity (liters)per week Price per liter Quantity (liters) per week Price per liter

30 $2.00 50 $2.00 50 $1.20

40 $1.75 60 $1.75 60 $1.30

55 $1.50 75 $1.50 75 $1.50

75 $1.25 95 $1.25 95 $1.75

100 $1.00 120 $1.00 120 $2.15

These are some of the key issues in the oil industry, it is also important to understand that any change in the prices of oil and gas in the US reverberates to the whole world.

Conclusion

The price increase in oil and gas increased the price of most of the things in the world, leading to inflation. Additionally, if the US does not implement proper fiscal measures to check on the escalating prices, the rate of inflation would increase and major trading blocs would break leading to more economic problem. It is therefore important for the fed to develop and implement policies that would help in minimizing the general impact of the oil crisis, by initiating measures geared at reducing the overdependence on oil and gas product. An alternative source of energy can be the only solution; however this new source should also be environmentally friendly.

Appointment System of State Judges

State judges carry out various duties just as federal judges but they differ in other aspects. Depending on a state’s legal arrangement, there may be different types of judges at the state level. Selection of state judges varies from state to state and it can be political at times since some judges are elected to their positions. State judges ought to be appointed since they keep watch over the legislative and executive branches of the government.

There are different types of state level judges thus their qualification differ from one level to the other (United States Institute of Peace 1). For instance, if one is looking forward to become a justice of peace in Texas. The candidate should be acquainted with the following qualifications; the candidate must be a citizen of United States, must be 18years of age prior to the appointment date, must be mentally competent, must have a clear or no criminal record and must be eligible for the office.

State judges therefore need to be appointed and not elected since their work is sensitive and requires high qualification levels, legal knowledge and ability, professional experience, judicial temperament, diligence, good health, financial responsibility, public service and integrity. State judges are in most cases appointed by state governors. These governors appoint judges who agree with their positions, while voters select governors who support their positions. There are two types of state judge’s appointment, i.e. gubernatorial appointment and legislative appointments (Maxwell, Crain and Santos 286). The main reasons as to why state judges should be appointed are as follows.

Most state judges who use appointment systems are appointed according to their integrity, experience and academic qualification unlike the elected state judges who may lack the necessary qualifications but be elected on basis of their political popularity. In most cases, appointed judges serve for a long time unlike the elected ones and this increases secrecy, competence and consistency in the judiciary. Mostly where state judges are elected, there are higher chances of negative campaigning and publicized disagreements over important issues getting into the judicial election process, especially where a candidate runs as a member of a well known political party. Judges who are influenced by campaign contributions are in most times unable to resist problems faced through associations and friendships that are brought forth in court (Oakley and Amar 48). This is unlikely to happen when appointment process is used. Appointment of state law judges ensures there is gender equality and increases chances of women representatives in the judiciary, especially where the court is already male dominated. In gubernatorial appointment, most people feel the selection mechanism is necessary for the promotion of judicial independence. In appointment system, judges are protected from the threat of removal that would result from an election. In addition, appointed judges have no worries about voters’ approval of their decision-making.

It is therefore important to employ the appointment method during selection process of state judges. This is because the appointment process is reliable, efficient and it guarantees secrecy and competence in the judiciary. However, it is necessary for any government to put in check the judges to be answerable to governors and citizens at large (Neubauer and Meinhold 87). This in return will reduce engagement of their personal affairs in the judiciary and political interference, thus increasing their performance and competency.
